Description

Flor de Pingus 2005 Magnum is one of Dominio de Pingus’ most compelling expressions of Tempranillo, offering much of the depth and polish of the flagship wine at a more accessible level. Sourced from older vineyards near the legendary Barrosso and San Cristóbal parcels in Castilla León, it reflects Peter Sisseck’s signature style: precision, concentration, and a strong sense of place. In magnum format, this 2005 vintage is especially attractive for collectors and for those looking to enjoy a wine with extra aging grace.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with plenty of intensity, though it is not as opaque or brooding as earlier, darker vintages. The bouquet opens with ripe plum, violet, and wild herbs, layered with warm spice, subtle smoke, and finely judged oak influence. On the palate, it is full-bodied and powerful, yet carried by a fresh, saline mineral core that keeps the wine focused and elegant. The texture is generous and broad, but the tannins remain well integrated, moving quietly in the background rather than dominating. There is plenty of fruit concentration here, balanced by freshness and savory detail, giving the wine real dimension and length. This is a wine with excellent cellaring potential, particularly in magnum, where it should continue to evolve beautifully over the coming years.

Production
Flor de Pingus is made from Tempranillo grown in partially leased vineyards close to the Barrosso and San Cristóbal plots, whose fruit also contributes to Pingus itself. The vines are around 60 years old, with deep roots that help draw out mineral character from the Castilla León soils and maintain balance during the region’s hot, dry summers. Harvesting is carefully done to preserve fruit purity, with a proportion of whole clusters used in fermentation to add complexity and structure. Fermentation takes place in large 2,000-liter oak barrels, with much of the process left to native yeasts and natural cellar conditions. The wine is then aged for 14 months in a combination of new French oak and seasoned French barrels previously used for Flor and Pingus, before bottling without fining or filtration. This approach gives the wine its distinctive blend of richness, texture, and lift.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for grilled lamb, roasted suckling pig, braised short ribs, game dishes, or rich mushroom-based plates. It also pairs well with aged Manchego and other mature hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours to allow the wine to fully open and show its aromatic depth.

Producer
Dominio de Pingus, founded by Danish-born winemaker Peter Sisseck, is one of the most celebrated names in modern Spanish wine. Based in Ribera del Duero, the estate quickly gained international acclaim for its precision, depth, and remarkable ability to express old-vine Tempranillo with both power and finesse. Alongside the cult wine Pingus, Flor de Pingus has become a benchmark in the region, admired for its quality and exceptional value relative to its prestige.
