Description
Named after a local slang phrase meaning “Do you get me?”, Domenico Clerico Nebbiolo Capisme-E 2019 is a Langhe Nebbiolo that speaks with clarity and charm from the very first sip. It offers all the classic character of Piedmont’s signature grape, wrapped in a more approachable, informal style that’s easy to enjoy young. With limited production (around 18,000 bottles), this is a distinctive snapshot of Nebbiolo from one of the Langhe’s most respected Barolo producers.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Capisme-E shows a bright, transparent ruby to garnet hue, typical of Nebbiolo, with a delicate, almost ethereal brightness at the rim. The nose is expressive and layered: aromas of dark cherries and blackberries are lifted by crushed rose petals, violet, and hints of tar, smoke, and licorice. Subtle earthy notes and a whisper of spice add complexity without weighing the wine down.
On the palate, this Nebbiolo is medium-bodied with a lively, energetic feel. Fine, well-structured tannins frame flavors of dark berry fruit, sour cherry, rose, and a gentle mineral edge, while the tar, smoke, and licorice tones return in a more savory register on the finish. The acidity is fresh and vivid, giving the wine excellent drinkability even in its youth. While it is crafted to be enjoyed earlier than Barolo, it has the structure to develop gracefully over the next 5–8 years, gaining more nuance and tertiary complexity with time.
Production
Capisme-E is sourced from Nebbiolo vines in the Langhe, where limestone- and clay-rich soils, rolling hills, and a cool continental climate combine to give wines of perfume, structure, and finesse. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of bunches at optimal ripeness, preserving the purity and typicity of Nebbiolo. In the cellar, the wine is vinified to emphasize fragrance and drinkability: gentle extraction during fermentation, followed by maturation in a mix of stainless steel and/or neutral wood (depending on the vintage) to soften the tannins while keeping the fruit and floral nuances at the forefront.
Food & Serving
This Langhe Nebbiolo is a versatile partner at the table and shines with northern Italian classics: tajarin pasta with meat ragù, mushroom risotto, vitello tonnato, grilled lamb chops, and truffle-based dishes all pair beautifully. It also works well with charcuterie, aged hard cheeses, and roasted poultry. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and refined tannins. A short decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended, especially in its youth, to let the tar, rose, and dark fruit aromas fully unfold.
Producer
Domenico Clerico is one of the modern icons of Piedmont, renowned for helping redefine Barolo and Langhe wines from the late 20th century onwards. Based in Monforte d’Alba, the estate has long focused on prime cru vineyards, meticulous work in the vines, and a thoughtful balance of traditional Nebbiolo character with modern precision in the cellar. Clerico’s wines, particularly from Barolo, have gained international acclaim for their intensity, elegance, and age-worthiness. Capisme-E represents the estate’s more playful, accessible side—an introduction to their style and to the charm of Nebbiolo outside of the more imposing Barolo appellation.
