Domäne Serrig, Riesling Kabinett Vogelsang, 2020

Domäne Serrig Riesling Kabinett Vogelsang 2020 is a finely etched Saar-style Riesling from one of the region’s most distinctive monopole vineyards. Produced from the steep south and southwest-facing slate slopes of Serrig, it combines purity, finesse, and a beautifully restrained Kabinett profile with the historical character of a former Prussian state estate.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a pale, luminous colour that hints at its delicacy and precision. The nose is bright and expressive, with notes of white fruit, green apple, and pear lifted by cool slate and mineral nuances. On the palate, the wine is graceful and light on its feet, yet driven by vivid acidity and a firm mineral backbone that gives shape and energy. The finish is crisp, clean, and lightly tingling, with excellent tension and length. It has the balance and structure to age gracefully for several years, gaining extra depth and complexity over time.

Production
The grapes come from the Vogelsang monopole in Serrig, a unique site with steep, south and southwest-facing slate soils that benefit from a cool microclimate ideal for slow, even ripening. Harvested by hand in early October, only fully ripe, healthy Riesling grapes are selected. After gentle pressing and brief skin contact, fermentation takes place spontaneously and slowly at low temperature, followed by ten months of aging on the lees in stainless steel and a further two years of bottle maturation.

Food & Serving
This Kabinett is remarkably versatile at the table and pairs especially well with light fish dishes, shellfish, sushi, and ceviche. It also works beautifully with Asian-inspired cuisine that has a touch of sweetness or spice, as well as poultry and mild cheeses. Serve well chilled, ideally around 8-10°C, and decanting is not necessary.

Domäne Serrig is a historic estate with roots as a former Prussian state property, making it an unusual and important part of the Saar wine landscape. Today, it has been carefully revived under the direction of Markus Molitor, whose uncompromising focus on quality has restored the estate’s reputation and elevated it to new prominence in the region.
