Description
Domaine Yannick Amirault’s Bourgueil La Petite Cave 2018 is a refined Loire Cabernet Franc that shows exactly why Bourgueil is one of the region’s most exciting appellations. Made from mature vines and certified organic farming, it combines purity, depth, and an elegant structure that reflects both the estate’s careful work and the character of the terroir.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine typically shows a deep ruby hue with a lively, polished appearance. The nose opens with aromas of cherry and blackberry, lifted by subtle cocoa notes that add warmth and complexity.
On the palate, it is supple and refined, with a smooth texture, balanced freshness, and well-integrated tannins. The finish is long and layered, leaving a sense of finesse and quiet power. While already approachable, it should also age gracefully over the next several years, gaining further nuance and softness.
Production
The 100% Cabernet Franc comes from vines averaging around 45 years of age, rooted in a terroir of limestone, clay, and sand in Bourgueil. The estate has farmed organically for years, with no fertilizer use since 1983 and grass maintained between the rows instead of herbicides. Harvesting is done entirely by hand in baskets, and the careful vinification aims to preserve the grape’s freshness, aromatic precision, and natural structure.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roast chicken, duck breast, grilled lamb, mushroom dishes, and charcuterie. It also works beautifully with aged cheeses and earthy vegetarian plates. Serve at around 16-18°C, and decanting for 30-60 minutes is recommended if opening it young to let the wine fully express its aromatics and texture.
Producer
Domaine Yannick Amirault is a respected family estate in the Loire, with roots dating back to 1977 when Yannick Amirault took over the vineyards from his family. Starting with just a few hectares in Bourgueil and Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, the domaine has grown to 19 hectares and has become known for its commitment to organic viticulture and old-vine expressions of Cabernet Franc. Today, it stands as one of the appellation’s most admired producers, valued for wines of clarity, balance, and authenticity.
