Description
Domaine Roger Perrin’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2001 is a beautifully mature expression of one of the Rhône Valley’s most storied appellations. Now fully in its drinking window, it offers the depth, warmth and savory complexity that only time in bottle can deliver. This cuvée is crafted from a classic southern Rhône blend dominated by Grenache, capturing the elegance and balance that made the 2001 vintage so admired in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2001 shows a deep plum to garnet core with a soft ruby rim, reflecting its age and graceful evolution. The nose is inviting and layered, with sweet kirsch liqueur, dried fig and dark cherry at the forefront, wrapped in notes of Provençal herbs, black pepper, warm spices and a subtle hint of soy and leather.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, silky and harmonious rather than heavy. The fruit is ripe and sweet-toned—think kirsch, macerated berries and fig paste—balanced by savory nuances of spice, pepper, dried herbs and a faint umami note. Tannins are now well-resolved and velvety, and the acidity keeps the wine fresh despite its maturity. At this stage, the wine is fully ready to drink, with its aromatics at a beautiful peak. While well-cellared bottles can still offer pleasure over the next few years, this 2001 is best enjoyed now to capture its tertiary complexity and finesse.
Production
The fruit for Domaine Roger Perrin’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape comes from the stony, sun-drenched terraces of the southern Rhône, where the iconic galets roulés (large rounded stones) sit atop clay and sandy soils. These stones store daytime heat and release it at night, helping Grenache and its blending partners reach full ripeness while the Mistral wind keeps the vines healthy and the grapes concentrated. Harvest is traditionally carried out by hand, with careful sorting to ensure only perfectly ripe clusters make it into the cellar. The 2001 was vinified in a classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape style, with gentle extraction to preserve elegance and purity of fruit, followed by maturation in a mix of vats and large neutral oak to refine texture and allow the wine’s spice, garrigue and savory notes to develop without overwhelming the natural character of the blend.
Food & Serving
This mature Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a natural partner for richly flavored, rustic cuisine. Think slow-braised lamb shank with rosemary, duck confit, roast game birds, or a hearty beef daube Provençale. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom dishes, truffled risotto, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego, where its savory and earthy notes really shine. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its nuances. Given its age, decant gently for about 30–45 minutes to separate any sediment and allow the bouquet to fully open, taking care not to overexpose it to air for too long.
