Description

Domaine Pierre Usseglio’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve des Deux Frères 2010 is a powerful, cellar-worthy red that captures the grandeur of this benchmark vintage in the Southern Rhône. Crafted from old-vine Grenache with a touch of Syrah, it’s a dense, opulent wine built for long aging rather than immediate gratification. For collectors and serious Rhône lovers, this is one of the domaine’s most coveted cuvées, produced only in top years and in limited quantities.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2010 Réserve des Deux Frères is nearly opaque, with a deep ink-black core fading to a saturated purple rim—an immediate sign of its concentration and youthfulness. The nose is intense and layered, opening with dark blackberry and blueberry compote, smoked meat and cured ham, followed by violets, black licorice, and a subtle backdrop of toasted bread and sweet spice from the Syrah’s élevage in small new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, massive, and richly textured, with a striking glycerol sheen that coats the mouth. Ripe black fruits—blackberry, blackcurrant and blueberry—are wrapped around a core of savory garrigue, smoked herbs, and hints of cocoa and roasted coffee. The tannins are abundant but veiled by the lush fruit and glycerin, giving a sense of power without harshness. Acidity is well-judged, keeping the wine vibrant despite its 15.5% alcohol. While already impressive, the 2010 is currently tight and brooding; it really needs time in bottle. Expect it to show its best from around 5–7 years after vintage and to evolve gracefully for 25–30 years or more in a good cellar.

Production
The Réserve des Deux Frères is sourced from some of Domaine Pierre Usseglio’s finest parcels in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where old Grenache vines rooted in a mix of galets roulés (large rounded stones), sand and clay deliver intensely concentrated fruit. In 2010, the blend is 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah, with approximately 30% whole clusters retained during fermentation to add structure, spice, and aromatic lift. The Grenache is typically aged in concrete or large, neutral vessels to preserve purity, while the Syrah component sees aging in small new oak barrels, lending subtle notes of toast, smoke, and polish to the final blend. Careful, hand-harvested fruit, low yields, and traditional Rhône vinification result in a wine that marries immense power with depth and complexity.

Food & Serving
This is a rich, imposing Châteauneuf-du-Pape that shines alongside equally flavorful, savory dishes. Think slow-braised lamb shanks with rosemary, beef daube Provençale, venison stew, wild boar ragù, or aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Gouda. For something simpler, grilled ribeye with herb butter or duck confit will also work beautifully. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F); if opening in the near term, decant generously for 2–3 hours to coax out the aromatics and soften the structure. At full maturity, a shorter decant of around one hour will help the wine unfold without stripping away its more delicate nuances.

Producer
Domaine Pierre Usseglio is one of the leading family estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, known for its deep-rooted vineyards and traditional yet quality-driven approach. Established in the mid-20th century, the domaine has steadily expanded its holdings and reputation, focusing on low yields, meticulous vineyard work, and careful, largely traditional vinification. Within the region, Usseglio is particularly respected for its concentrated, age-worthy Grenache-based cuvées, of which Réserve des Deux Frères represents the pinnacle in terms of power and cellar potential. Consistently praised by international critics, the domaine has become a reference point for enthusiasts seeking authentic, top-tier Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
