Description

Domaine Pierre Usseglio’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve des Deux Frères 2005 is a powerful, old-vine Grenache that captures the very best of this legendary Rhône vintage. Crafted in tiny quantities, it’s a rich, opulent and deeply structured wine aimed at serious collectors and Grenache lovers alike. This cuvée has earned a reputation as one of the estate’s most ambitious and ageworthy bottlings, regularly counted among the standout wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2005 Réserve des Deux Frères shows a deep, dense ruby to garnet hue, with a slightly evolved rim that hints at its maturity while still retaining impressive color concentration. The nose is immediately expressive and complex, unfolding with waves of ripe blackberries, black cherries and plum compote, wrapped in notes of black licorice, roasted meat, truffle, cracked black pepper and dried Provençal herbs. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, generously textured wine with remarkable concentration and depth. The dark fruit core is layered with savory tones of smoked game, roasted herbs and earthy truffle, all underpinned by fine yet substantial tannins and a vibrant streak of acidity that keeps the richness in check. The finish is long, warm and spicy, with echoes of licorice, pepper and black fruit. Now in the early stages of its mature drinking window, the 2005 still has the structure to develop further complexity over the next decade, offering a total aging potential in the range of 20–25 years from vintage.

Production
Sourced from some of the domaine’s best parcels in the famed terroirs of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Réserve des Deux Frères is made from 100% Grenache, typically from old vines rooted in a mosaic of galets roulés (round river stones), sandy soils and clay-limestone. The stony Rhône plateau provides excellent drainage and heat retention, helping Grenache achieve exceptional ripeness and concentration while cool nights preserve freshness. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal maturity and carefully sorted to ensure only pristine fruit enters the winery. Vinification focuses on extracting depth and structure without sacrificing finesse, followed by élevage in a mix of one-, two- and three-year-old small barrels and demi-muids, allowing the wine to gain complexity and texture without being overwhelmed by new oak.

Food & Serving
This Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a natural match for richly flavored, slow-cooked dishes: think braised lamb shank, roast venison, duck confit, beef daube Provençale or grilled ribeye with herb butter. It also pairs beautifully with dishes featuring truffle, wild mushrooms, roasted root vegetables and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to fully open the aromatic profile and soften the tannins, especially if the bottle has been cellared in cool conditions.

Producer
Domaine Pierre Usseglio is one of the benchmark family estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, built over generations into a respected reference for powerful yet refined southern Rhône wines. Located in the heart of the appellation, the domaine farms prime vineyards across some of the region’s most celebrated lieux-dits, combining traditional know-how with thoughtful, quality-driven viticulture. Over the years, the estate has become particularly renowned for its Grenache-based cuvées, with Réserve des Deux Frères standing at the top of the range as a limited, highly sought-after bottling that showcases the full potential and longevity of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in great vintages like 2005.
