Description

Domaine Petit-Roy Monthelie Les Crays 2022 is a strikingly fresh and feather-light expression of Pinot Noir from the heart of Burgundy. Clocking in at just 10.5% alcohol, it delivers vivid, crunchy red fruit and a sense of lift that’s rare for the appellation. Crafted with whole-cluster fermentation, this cuvée offers a playful yet precise take on Monthelie, standing out for its energy, drinkability, and authenticity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Monthelie Les Crays shows a translucent ruby hue with delicate garnet highlights, signaling its finesse-driven style. The nose is bright and lifted, offering notes of wild strawberries, red cherries, crushed raspberries, and red currants, layered with rose petals, fresh herbs, and a subtle stemmy spice from the whole clusters. Gentle hints of wet stone and a touch of white pepper add complexity without weighing the wine down. On the palate, the wine is light-bodied yet intensely flavorful, driven by acidity rather than alcohol. Juicy red berry fruit, cranberry, and pomegranate peel mingle with fine-boned tannins and a savory, sappy edge characteristic of whole-bunch Pinot. The finish is clean, crisp, and mouthwatering, with a lingering impression of red fruit, spice, and mineral tension. While this vintage is wonderfully approachable in its youth and clearly made for early enjoyment, it should develop additional nuance over the next 3–5 years, gaining more forest floor and herbal complexity while retaining its graceful structure.

Production
Les Crays is a stony, well-drained site in Monthelie, where thin soils over limestone help produce delicate, high-toned Pinot Noir with a clear mineral backbone. In 2022, a hot summer initially stressed the vines and slowed their activity, but cooler, more moderate conditions at the end of the season allowed for a balanced and measured ripening at lower potential alcohol. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at Domaine Petit-Roy, with a strict sorting to retain only pristine fruit. This cuvée is vinified with whole-cluster fermentation, allowing stems to contribute aromatic lift, structure, and savory complexity. Fermentation takes place with native yeasts, and the élevage is generally gentle and minimalistic—often in used oak—preserving fruit purity, freshness, and a sense of place rather than oak imprint or extraction.

Food & Serving
This light, vibrant Monthelie is ideal for dishes that echo its delicacy and freshness. Think roast chicken with herbs, duck breast with cherries, charcuterie, pâté, veal blanquette, or simple pork loin with thyme. It also complements mushroom dishes, lentil salads, and soft to semi-soft cheeses such as Brie, Reblochon, or Tomme. Serve slightly chilled, around 14–16°C (57–61°F), to highlight its crunchy red fruit and lively acidity. A short decant of 20–30 minutes, or simply opening the bottle a bit before serving, helps the whole-cluster aromatics unwind and brings extra nuance to the nose.
