Description
Domaine Ogereau’s Savennières Blanc Clos Grand Beaupreau 2023 is a striking expression of dry Chenin Blanc from one of the Loire’s most revered appellations. Sourced from a walled vineyard at the top of the Savennières hillside, it combines remarkable intensity, precision, and ageing potential in a style that captures the true grandeur of the region.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this is a vivid, concentrated white wine with a polished, slightly oily texture and an energetic, mouthwatering backbone. The nose is layered and persistent, unfolding with ripe apple, yellow flowers, apricot, orange peel, lime zest, dried grass, sea spray, fresh bread, and a touch of honey.
On the palate, it is both compact and expansive, showing yellow apple, mirabelle plum, citrus, apple core, wet limestone, white petals, and a subtle caramelised note that adds depth without softness. Despite its weight and richness, the wine remains tightly drawn and crystalline, finishing long, refined, and lifted by signature Chenin acidity. It has excellent ageing potential and should evolve beautifully over many years.
Production
Clos le Grand Beaupréau sits at one of the highest points in Savennières, on ventilated schist soils with patches of eroded sand near the surface and excellent exposure close to the Loire. The vineyard is farmed for early hand harvesting to preserve finesse and aromatic definition, with fruit picked at measured ripeness to reflect the site rather than overt richness. In the cellar, whole clusters are gently pressed, then fermented with indigenous yeasts in a combination of large and smaller oak casks. Malolactic conversion occurs spontaneously depending on the vintage, and the wine is aged for 12 to 18 months on full lees in 500- and 2,000-litre oak barrels, including a small proportion of new wood, adding texture and complexity rather than oak flavour.
Food & Serving
This is a wine built for food, and it shines with cream-based vegetable dishes, steamed mussels, and lighter meat preparations, especially poultry or veal with delicate sauces. Serve it chilled but not overly cold, ideally around 10–12°C, and consider decanting younger bottles briefly if you want to open up its aromatic depth; older bottles may only need a careful splash into the glass.
Producer
Domaine Ogereau is a respected family estate in the Loire, known for producing highly expressive wines that reflect their sites with precision and restraint. In Savennières, the domaine has earned particular recognition for showing the power and longevity of Chenin Blanc without losing freshness or balance, and its wines are widely regarded among the region’s most compelling modern references.
