Sancerre is best known for its whites, but Domaine Merlin-Cherrier shows just how compelling the region’s red side can be. Made from 100% Pinot Noir from the estate’s own vineyards, this 2020 bottling stands out for its character, precision, and a subtle historical link to some of the appellation’s older vines.

Tasting Notes
Pale ruby in the glass, this Sancerre Rouge has a fresh, lifted profile that feels especially true to its Loire origins. The nose is notably expressive for Pinot Noir, with red berries like strawberry and raspberry, floral accents, herbs, and an uncommon hint of citrus that adds brightness and intrigue. On the palate, the wine is juicy yet dry, with clean fruit, fine tension, and a refreshing finish. Its balance of fruit and structure makes it approachable now, especially with a slight chill, though it should continue to drink well over the next few years.

Production
The fruit comes from two estate parcels planted in 1964 and 1988, giving the wine depth and a sense of old-vine character. After fermentation, Thierry Merlin-Cherrier matures the wine in a combination of stainless steel and very large oak casks, preserving freshness while adding texture without overwhelming the Pinot Noir fruit.

Food & Serving
A lightly chilled serving temperature works best here, around 14–16°C, to highlight the wine’s freshness and lift. It pairs beautifully with roast chicken, duck, grilled salmon, mushroom dishes, charcuterie, and soft cheeses. Decanting is not essential, but a brief aeration can help the aromatics open up.
