Domaine Louis Cheze, Saint Joseph Caroline, 2023

Domaine Louis Chèze’s Saint-Joseph Caroline 2023 is a powerful, classically styled Syrah from the northern Rhône, where precision and terroir drive every detail. Sourced from a prized hillside parcel, it reflects both the appellation’s rugged elegance and the domaine’s long-standing commitment to expressive, site-driven wines.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep garnet colour that hints at its concentration and structure. The nose is intensely Syrah, with violet, black pepper, and layered spicy notes leading the way. The palate is full-bodied and well structured, with ripe tannins, dark-fruited depth, and a long, persistent finish. It has the balance and backbone to age gracefully, gaining further complexity over the coming years.

Production
Caroline comes from a single parcel at around 300 metres of altitude, with a south-facing exposure and granite-rich soils that suit Syrah perfectly. The vines are around 40 years old, contributing naturally low yields and impressive concentration. The wine is aged for 14 months in French oak barrels, which adds subtle complexity while preserving the purity of the fruit.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for grilled red meats, roast lamb, game, and hard, mature cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting for about an hour is recommended if opened young to help the wine fully open up.

Domaine Louis Chèze was founded in 1978, when Louis Chèze took over his family estate in Limony. Today the domaine farms around 45 hectares across prestigious northern Rhône appellations including Condrieu, Côte-Rôtie, and Saint-Joseph, and is recognised as a pioneer in the revival of the Seyssuel terroir.
