Domaine la Soumade Côtes du Rhône 2023

Domaine la Soumade Côtes du Rhône 2023 is a seriously good-value Rhône red that punches well above its appellation, with a style that can easily bring to mind the structure and generosity of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Made from Grenache with a supporting dose of Syrah, it comes from young vines and delivers a vivid, characterful expression of the southern Rhône.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a clear ruby-red color. The nose is inviting and layered, with red and dark fruit, violets, liquorice, smoke, and a subtle tar-like edge. On the palate, juicy cranberry, strawberry, and blackberry lead the way, followed by notes of white pepper, clove, and a hint of vanilla. It is already very approachable now, but it should continue to drink beautifully for the next 4–5 years.

Production
The grapes come from younger vines, up to around 10 years old, rooted in limestone- and clay-rich soils. The wine is made in a traditional style in open vats, then aged for 18 months in stainless steel tank, with a very light filtration before bottling to preserve freshness and detail.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile food wine that works especially well with grilled lamb, roast chicken, sausages, Provençal vegetables, and dishes with herbs and spices. Serve it at around 16–18°C, and decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended if you want to soften the edges and open up the aromatics.
