Description
Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron’s Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru 2018 is a finely crafted Burgundy that combines the elegance expected from Chambolle with the depth and concentration that have made this domaine one of the region’s most respected names. Made from Pinot Noir in a tiny-yield vintage, it offers both perfume and power, with a style shaped by careful early harvesting and a history of uncompromising quality dating back to 1926.
Tasting Notes
Deep red-ruby in the glass, this 2018 opens with superripe aromas of raspberry, blueberry, coffee, mocha, and a smoky mineral edge that adds lift and precision. As it unfolds, violet notes bring freshness and a distinctly floral register to the bouquet.
On the palate, it is dense, rich, and chocolatey, with thick dark-fruit flavors carried by impressive intensity and energy. The finish is long and firm, with tannins that gently grip the front teeth. While already expressive, it has the structure to age gracefully for many years, gaining further nuance and complexity with cellaring.
Production
The vines are rooted in limestone-rich soils with pockets of clay in the southern Côte de Nuits, where the cool Burgundian terroir helps preserve aromatic finesse and freshness. The domaine works organically, follows lunar cycles in the vineyard, ploughs with horses, and harvests relatively early to retain balance and purity. Yields are low, around 28–30 hl/ha, and the wine is aged with an exacting approach, including 100% new French oak and bottling without prior filtration until the final stage.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as duck breast, roast quail, veal tenderloin, mushroom risotto, or game birds with earthy sauces. Serve at around 15–17°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes if opening young to allow the aromatics and texture to fully open.
Producer
Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron was founded in 1926 by Jean Confuron and Anne-Marie Bouchard de Premeaux, and is based in the southern part of the Côte de Nuits. The estate has long been regarded as one of Burgundy’s top producers and has experienced a notable renaissance under the stewardship of Sophie Meunier and her husband Alain, with their son Louis now increasingly taking over winemaking. Known for its precision, depth of fruit, and commitment to quality, the domaine has also stood out for its organic viticulture since the 1990s and its traditional, hands-on farming methods.
