Description

Domaine Hubert Lamy’s Chassagne-Montrachet La Goujonne Vieilles Vignes 2017 is a refined, terroir-driven red Burgundy crafted from old-vine Pinot Noir. Sourced from one of Chassagne’s lesser-known but highly regarded lieux-dits, it offers a beautifully poised expression of Côte de Beaune elegance with depth, finesse and subtle power. This cuvée stands out for its combination of old-vine concentration and the precision that has made Lamy one of the most respected names in modern Burgundy.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a luminous ruby to medium garnet hue, with a clear, delicate rim that hints at its finesse rather than sheer extraction. The nose opens with pure red berry notes—wild strawberry, raspberry and red cherry—layered with rose petals, a touch of pomegranate, and fine herbal and mineral undertones. With air, more complexity emerges: hints of cool earth, subtle spice, light forest floor and a discreet, well-integrated oak character. On the palate, this Chassagne-Montrachet is supple and precise rather than heavy, with silky tannins and a fresh, lively acidity that gives the wine tension and length. The old vines add an extra dimension of concentration to the red fruit core, supported by notes of crushed stones, gentle savory spice and a faint smokiness. The finish is long, elegant and mouthwatering, suggesting excellent balance and drive. While already approachable and charming now, the 2017 vintage has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 6–10 years, gaining more tertiary complexity and silkier texture with time in the cellar.

Production
La Goujonne is a Chassagne-Montrachet lieu-dit characterized by limestone-rich soils with layers of clay and fine gravel, giving wines that marry aromatic lift with a grounded mineral backbone. The “Vieilles Vignes” designation reflects the estate’s mature Pinot Noir vines, which naturally yield smaller crops of more concentrated fruit. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve freshness and to allow rigorous selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, Domaine Hubert Lamy follows a restrained, artisanal approach: careful destemming (often with a proportion of whole clusters depending on the vintage), gentle extraction during fermentation, and élevage in French oak barrels—usually with a moderate use of new oak—to enhance texture and complexity without dominating the delicate fruit and terroir expression.

Food & Serving
This refined red Burgundy is a versatile partner for elegant, subtly flavored dishes: think roast chicken with herbs, veal or pork tenderloin, duck breast with cherries, or classic Burgundian cuisine such as coq au vin or rabbit with mustard. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom dishes, truffled pasta, and semi-soft cheeses like Époisses, Reblochon or a well-aged Comté. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F). Decanting for 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up its floral and red-fruited aromatics, especially in its youth, though a gentle pour into large Burgundy stems will also allow it to unfold gradually in the glass.

Producer
Domaine Hubert Lamy, based in the village of Saint-Aubin in Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune, is widely recognized as one of the region’s benchmark estates. The Lamy family has been growing vines in the area since the 17th century, but it was Hubert Lamy, and now his son Olivier, who elevated the domaine to international acclaim through meticulous vineyard work and a terroir-first philosophy. While particularly renowned for their whites from Saint-Aubin and surrounding appellations, the domaine’s reds—such as this Chassagne-Montrachet La Goujonne Vieilles Vignes—show the same precision, purity and sense of place. With a reputation for low yields, careful farming and thoughtful, minimalist winemaking, Domaine Hubert Lamy has become a reference point for serious Burgundy lovers seeking wines of clarity, energy and longevity.
