Description

Domaine Georges Roumier Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Clos de la Bussière 2021 is a benchmark red Burgundy from one of the region’s most revered producers. Sourced from a walled Premier Cru monopole, this wine combines depth, precision and refinement in a distinctly Morey-Saint-Denis style. Clos de la Bussière has long been prized for its darker fruit profile and firm structure, offering a powerful counterpoint to Roumier’s more ethereal Chambolle cuvées.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Clos de la Bussière shows a deep, vibrant ruby hue with youthful clarity at the rim. The nose opens with pure notes of black cherry, dark berries and ripe plum, lifted by warm baking spices, hints of orange zest and a touch of earthy minerality. Subtle floral tones and a whisper of wood spice emerge with air, adding complexity. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, concentrated and layered, with a core of dark, fleshy fruit wrapped in fine yet firm, powdery tannins. The interplay of ripe cherry, blackberry and plum is framed by vibrant acidity, giving the wine both energy and precision. Spiced undertones, citrus peel and a saline, stony finish underline its Premier Cru pedigree. Still youthful and tightly knit, the 2021 has excellent aging potential; it will reward 8–15 years in the cellar and continue to evolve gracefully beyond that in good conditions.

Production
Clos de la Bussière is a single, walled Premier Cru vineyard (monopole) in Morey-Saint-Denis, benefiting from a cool-to-temperate climate, clay-limestone soils and a slightly earlier-ripening exposition that helps the Pinot Noir achieve full maturity even in more classical, cooler vintages like 2021. Domaine Georges Roumier works with low yields and careful vineyard husbandry, following a thoughtful, minimally interventionist approach to preserve terroir character. The grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, sorted rigorously, then vinified with gentle extraction to retain finesse and aromatic purity. Elevage typically takes place in French oak barrels, with a measured proportion of new oak, allowing the wine to gain texture and complexity without overwhelming its precision and minerality.

Food & Serving
This Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru is a natural partner for refined yet flavourful dishes such as roast duck, pigeon, game birds, veal chops, lamb with herbs, or classic Burgundian dishes like coq au vin and oeufs en meurette. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, truffle-infused preparations and aged hard cheeses. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatic detail and freshness. In its youth, decanting for 45–60 minutes is recommended to soften the tannins and allow the wine’s perfume to fully emerge; older bottles should be handled gently and, if decanted, only briefly.

Producer
Domaine Georges Roumier, based in Chambolle-Musigny, is one of Burgundy’s most esteemed domaines, founded in 1924 and now overseen by Christophe Roumier. Over the decades, the estate has built a reputation for wines of remarkable precision, purity and longevity, expressing some of the Côte de Nuits’ finest terroirs. Clos de la Bussière, a historic Premier Cru monopole in Morey-Saint-Denis, has been under Roumier’s care since the mid-20th century and is renowned for producing some of the village’s most distinctive, structured reds. Frequently cited by critics and collectors alike, the domaine’s wines are benchmarks for their appellations and are considered among the most sought-after expressions of Pinot Noir in the world.
