Description
Domaine François Villard Les Contours de Mairlant 2021 is a characterful northern Rhône white that showcases the depth and charm of Marsanne and Roussanne in the hands of a master. Crafted by one of the region’s most respected vignerons, it offers generous fruit, textured richness and precise freshness in a beautifully balanced style. This cuvée sits just outside Villard’s flagship crus, giving you a taste of top-tier Rhône craftsmanship at a more accessible price.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Les Contours de Mairlant 2021 shows a bright, pale golden color with subtle green highlights, hinting at both ripeness and vibrancy. The nose is inviting and layered: ripe pear, white peach and apricot mingle with notes of acacia blossom, honeycomb and almond, supported by a delicate thread of citrus zest and a touch of crushed stone.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a lovely, rounded texture from the Marsanne, lifted by Roussanne’s floral finesse and fresh acidity. Flavors of stone fruit, pear and citrus are wrapped in gentle notes of beeswax, chamomile, fennel and a light, savory nuttiness, leading into a long, clean, slightly saline finish. While already very enjoyable in its youth, the structure and concentration suggest it will develop additional complexity over the next 3–5 years, gaining more honeyed, nutty nuances with short- to mid-term cellaring.
Production
Les Contours de Mairlant is sourced from selected northern Rhône sites, where Marsanne and Roussanne grow on predominantly granitic and alluvial soils that lend both mineral tension and aromatic lift. François Villard practices meticulous vineyard work, favoring careful canopy management and controlled yields to ensure ripe, concentrated fruit while preserving natural freshness. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, sorted rigorously and gently pressed. Fermentation typically takes place with indigenous yeasts, often in a mix of stainless steel and oak, with a portion raised on fine lees to build texture and complexity without overwhelming the wine’s purity, resulting in a refined yet expressive Rhône blanc.
Food & Serving
This northern Rhône white is a versatile partner at the table, pairing beautifully with seared scallops, grilled prawns, roasted chicken with herbs, veal in light cream sauces, or richer seafood dishes such as lobster or monkfish. It also complements soft and semi-hard cheeses like Comté, Beaufort or aged goat cheese, as well as Mediterranean-inspired vegetable dishes. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight both freshness and aromatic depth. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up, especially if served in its youth or from a cooler cellar.
Producer
Domaine François Villard is one of the benchmark names in the northern Rhône, renowned for its precise, expressive whites and increasingly coveted reds. Founded in the late 1980s by François Villard, a former sommelier turned vigneron, the estate has grown from a handful of parcels to an impressive mosaic of vineyards across appellations such as Condrieu, Saint-Joseph and Côte-Rôtie. Villard’s meticulous, quality-driven approach in both vineyard and cellar has helped elevate the reputation of Rhône whites, demonstrating that Marsanne and Roussanne can rival the world’s great white wines in complexity and longevity. His wines are now sought after by enthusiasts and collectors, and Les Contours de Mairlant offers a glimpse into that same philosophy and craftsmanship from slightly more accessible terroirs.
