Description

Domaine du Gringet’s Etraz 2023 is a characterful, single-vineyard white from the alpine slopes of Savoie, crafted entirely from the rare local Gringet grape. This cuvée comes from the “Vers Etraz” parcel, a dramatically stony site that gives the wine its striking mineral backbone and lifted, mountain-fresh aromatics. Designed to showcase the uniqueness of this terroir, Etraz is both precise and expressive, offering an authentic taste of high-altitude France.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Etraz 2023 is pale straw with green reflections, immediately hinting at its youthful energy and alpine origin. The nose is vivid and detailed: bergamot and lemon zest lead the way, followed by fennel fronds, crushed limestone, and a subtle herbal lift that recalls mountain air and wildflowers. On the palate, the wine is beautifully intense and linear, with a firm, stony core that speaks directly to its limestone scree soils. Juicy citrus—bergamot, lime, and a touch of grapefruit—interplays with aniseed, fennel, and a delicate bitterness that adds structure rather than weight. The texture is taut and finely etched, with vibrant acidity carrying the flavors through to a long, saline, mineral-driven finish. Enjoyable now for its tension and aromatic purity, Etraz has the structure to evolve over the next 3–6 years, gaining complexity and a more pronounced savory, mineral depth.

Production
The “Vers Etraz” vineyard sits on slopes strewn with limestone scree—layers of small, fractured pebbles that offer excellent drainage and naturally limit yields, concentrating flavor in the Gringet grapes. This cool, alpine terroir benefits from significant diurnal temperature swings, preserving acidity and aromatic freshness. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to protect the delicate skins and preserve the purity of fruit. In the cellar, vinification for Etraz follows the estate’s minimalist, terroir-focused approach: gentle pressing, native yeast fermentation, and élevage in neutral vessels (such as stainless steel or old barrels) to avoid masking the vineyard character. The goal throughout is to let the Vers Etraz site speak clearly in the glass, rather than imposing a heavy winemaking signature.

Food & Serving
Etraz 2023 is a natural partner for alpine and seafood-driven cuisine. Think fresh oysters, poached white fish with fennel, grilled prawns, or delicate ceviche, as well as goat’s cheese, raclette-style dishes, and vegetable-focused plates with fennel, asparagus, or citrus accents. Its bright acidity and mineral tension also complement sushi and lightly spiced Asian dishes. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 9–11°C (48–52°F), to allow the aromatics to unfold. A brief decant of 15–20 minutes, or simply opening the bottle a little before serving, can help the wine broaden and reveal more of its subtle herbal and stony nuances.

Producer
Domaine du Gringet is a quality-focused estate in Savoie dedicated to championing the indigenous Gringet grape, one of the region’s rare and most distinctive white varieties. Working at altitude in the foothills of the Alps, the domaine places terroir expression at the center of its philosophy, crafting wines that reflect their specific vineyard origins rather than a heavy winemaking hand. With a growing reputation among sommeliers and wine lovers seeking authentic, mountain-born whites, Domaine du Gringet has become a reference point for pure, mineral-driven Gringet. The single-vineyard bottlings, such as Etraz, highlight just how nuanced and site-sensitive this variety can be in the cool, stony slopes of Savoie.
