Description
Domaine du Gringet’s Etraz 2022 is a pure, crystalline expression of the rare Gringet grape from the high-altitude slopes of Savoie in eastern France. Sourced from the single vineyard “Vers Etraz,” this cuvée showcases the precision and minerality that have made the estate a reference point for alpine whites. It’s crafted to let the vineyard speak clearly in the glass, emphasizing terroir over winemaking embellishment.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Etraz 2022 is pale straw with silvery, almost crystalline highlights that immediately hint at its alpine origin. The nose is lifted and finely etched, offering bergamot zest, fennel fronds, crushed limestone, and delicate alpine herbs, with a whisper of white flowers in the background.
On the palate, the wine is beautifully intense yet finely detailed, driven by a pronounced, stony minerality. Citrus notes—think bergamot, lemon peel, and a hint of grapefruit pith—are intertwined with savory fennel, subtle anise, and a cool, saline edge. The texture is taut and linear rather than broad, with a racy, mouthwatering acidity that stretches the finish long and clean. Enjoyable now for its energy and precision, it also has the structure and freshness to evolve nicely over the next 3–6 years, gaining a bit more complexity and nuance with time in bottle.
Production
The Vers Etraz vineyard sits on limestone scree—an accumulation of small, broken limestone pebbles—that delivers excellent drainage and forces the vines to dig deep, concentrating flavor while preserving acidity. This stony, high-altitude terroir is key to the wine’s tension and mineral profile, and it benefits from the cool alpine climate of Savoie, which naturally extends the growing season and protects aromatic delicacy. As with all single-vineyard wines from Domaine du Gringet, harvesting is carried out with great care to ensure healthy, ripe but fresh fruit. Vinification is intentionally minimalist and consistent across the range: gentle pressing, native fermentations where possible, and a slow, unobtrusive élevage designed to let the specific character of Vers Etraz shine through rather than the imprint of heavy oak or aggressive winemaking techniques.
Food & Serving
Etraz 2022 is a natural partner for refined, delicate dishes that echo its alpine freshness and mineral spine. Think freshwater fish (trout, char, pike-perch), shellfish, scallop carpaccio, goat’s cheese, raclette or lighter Savoyard fare, as well as vegetable-focused plates like fennel and citrus salads or asparagus with beurre blanc. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 9–11°C (48–52°F), to allow the aromatics of bergamot and fennel to fully open. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes, or simply letting the wine breathe in the glass, can help reveal additional layers of minerality and texture.
Producer
Domaine du Gringet is dedicated to championing one of Savoie’s most distinctive and rare white varieties: Gringet. Operating in the alpine foothills of eastern France, the estate has become known for crafting precise, terroir-driven wines that highlight the region’s steep slopes, cool climate, and limestone-rich soils. By focusing on single-vineyard bottlings such as Etraz, the domaine underscores the subtle differences in exposition, soil composition, and altitude that define each site. This commitment to authenticity and site expression has made Domaine du Gringet an important reference for enthusiasts seeking the purity and originality of Savoie’s white wines, and a leading voice in the preservation and elevation of the Gringet grape on the international stage.
