Description

Domaine du Gringet’s Aubeterre 2022 is a rare glimpse into the character of Altesse from one of Savoie’s most exciting small estates. As the domaine’s only cuvée made from this noble local grape, it stands apart from their signature Gringet wines while remaining firmly rooted in the same mountain terroir. Eligible for the Roussette de Savoie AOC, Aubeterre captures both the finesse of Altesse and the purity of high-altitude viticulture in the French Alps.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Aubeterre 2022 shows a pale straw to light gold hue, with a gentle luminosity that hints at freshness and depth. The nose opens with inviting aromas of dried hay and alpine meadow, followed by beeswax, ripe stone fruits such as apricot and peach, and a subtle floral lift. On the palate, the wine offers a distinctly waxy, almost lanolin-like texture that sets it apart from its Gringet counterparts. Ripe stonefruit flavors are layered with notes of honeycomb, herbal nuances, and a faint nuttiness, all wrapped in a precise, mountain-driven acidity. The finish is long, textural, and slightly savory, making the wine both contemplative and very food-friendly. While already expressive in its youth, this Altesse has the structure and extract to evolve gracefully over the next several years, gaining further complexity and tertiary notes with careful cellaring.

Production
Aubeterre comes from a single downslope plot in Savoie, positioned just below a parcel of Gringet that is used for the domaine’s La Paille cuvée. The cooler alpine climate, steep slopes, and stony, mineral-rich soils give the wine its tension and clarity, while the slightly lower position on the slope contributes to its richer, waxier texture and riper fruit profile. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure optimal selection and to protect the delicate Altesse berries. Vinification mirrors the domaine’s approach with Gringet: gentle pressing, a careful, non-interventionist fermentation—most likely with indigenous yeasts—and élevage designed to preserve purity, texture, and the honest expression of this single parcel without excessive oak influence.

Food & Serving
This Altesse is a natural partner for the cuisine of the Alps and beyond. Try it with Savoyard dishes such as raclette, tartiflette, or cheese fondue, as well as roasted chicken, white fish in butter or cream sauces, shellfish, and dishes with mushrooms or root vegetables. Its waxy texture and stonefruit character also make it excellent with semi-hard cheeses like Comté, Beaufort, or aged Tomme. Serve lightly chilled at around 10–12°C (50–54°F) to allow the aromatics and texture to fully unfold. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up, especially in its youth.

Producer
Domaine du Gringet is a small, quality-driven estate in Savoie, best known for championing the rare local white grape Gringet and for crafting wines that faithfully reflect their alpine terroirs. Working in a region historically overshadowed by more famous French appellations, the domaine has become a reference point for serious, terroir-driven Savoie wines. Aubeterre, as their only Altesse cuvée, underscores their commitment to local varieties and precise, site-specific expressions. By focusing on single parcels and careful, thoughtful farming and winemaking, Domaine du Gringet has helped elevate the reputation of Savoie wines on the international stage, attracting attention from sommeliers and wine lovers seeking distinctive, mountain-born whites.
