Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 shows a luminous, medium ruby colour with violet highlights, signalling freshness and youth. The nose is precise and expressive: ripe red and black berries (raspberry, redcurrant, black cherry), crushed violets and peony, with the classic Loire Cabernet Franc signatures of graphite, a hint of green peppercorn and a subtle, almost chalky minerality. Gentle notes of spice and a faint, savoury edge add complexity without weighing the wine down. On the palate, it’s all about tension and drinkability. Juicy raspberry and blackberry fruit glide over a fine-boned structure, supported by lively acidity and silky, lightly grippy tannins. There’s a mouth-watering core of red fruit, intertwined with notes of blackcurrant leaf, white pepper and a cool, stony finish that reflects its limestone origins. The fruit for this cuvée comes from organically farmed vineyards on the limestone and tuffeau soils of Saumur-Champigny, which lend both finesse and a distinctive mineral line to the wine. Thierry Germain is known for meticulous vineyard work: low yields, careful canopy management and hand-harvesting at optimal ripeness ensure healthy, concentrated berries. In the cellar, the philosophy is minimal intervention: gentle extraction, fermentation with indigenous yeasts in tank or large vats, and élevage designed to preserve freshness and perfume rather than add overt oak. The result is a transparent expression of Loire Cabernet Franc and its chalky terroir.
