Description

“L’Insolite” – “the unusual” – is a fitting name for this striking Saumur Blanc from Thierry Germain’s Domaine des Roches Neuves. Crafted from old-vine Chenin Blanc in the heart of the Loire, the 2023 vintage marries luminous freshness with remarkable depth and texture. It stands out as a refined, terroir-driven expression that shows just how serious and compelling Loire Chenin can be, without ever feeling heavy or difficult to understand.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Domaine des Roches Neuves L’Insolite Saumur Blanc 2023 shows a pale straw to light golden hue, with subtle green reflections hinting at its youth and vitality. The nose is pure and detailed, opening with notes of white flowers, crisp pear, quince and yellow apple, layered with hints of chalk, wet stone, and a delicate touch of fennel, citrus zest and flint. On the palate, the wine is both concentrated and weightless: a fine, silky texture carries flavours of ripe orchard fruit, Meyer lemon, white peach and acacia honey, all cut by a precise, saline-driven acidity. There’s a distinct mineral backbone from the limestone-rich soils, with nuances of smoke and subtle spice emerging as it opens in the glass. The finish is long, clean and mouth-watering, promising excellent aging potential; over the next 5–10 years, the 2023 should gain even more complexity, with honeyed, nutty and waxy notes developing while retaining its tension and energy.

Production
L’Insolite comes from organically farmed, old Chenin Blanc vines – some up to around 80 years old – rooted in Saumur’s classic tuffeau limestone and clay-limestone soils, with veins of sand and pockets of flint. This terroir lends both finesse and a pronounced mineral edge to the wine. Grapes are hand-harvested in multiple passes to ensure optimal ripeness and strict selection of only the healthiest fruit. After a very gentle, extended pressing that slowly extracts fine aromatics and texture from the skins, the must undergoes spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in large 1,200 L wooden casks. The wine then rests on its fine lees for many months, bringing depth and creaminess, before being bottled with minimal intervention, no fining and only light filtration to preserve its natural character.

Food & Serving
This Saumur Blanc is an excellent partner for refined, subtly flavoured dishes that echo its tension and minerality. Think shellfish (oysters, scallops, langoustines), simply grilled fish, sushi and sashimi, or classic Loire pairings like goat’s cheese, especially aged chèvre. It also works beautifully with roast poultry, veal in light cream sauces, and vegetable dishes featuring fennel, leek, or mushrooms. Serve chilled but not too cold, ideally around 10–12 °C, to let the aromatics fully unfold. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes, or simply giving it time in the glass, helps the wine open up and reveal its layered, stony complexity.

Producer
Domaine des Roches Neuves, led by the highly regarded vigneron Thierry Germain, is one of the benchmark estates in Saumur and a reference point for Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc in the Loire Valley. Originally from Bordeaux, Germain took over the estate in the early 1990s and gradually converted it to organic and then biodynamic farming, becoming one of the region’s leading voices for terroir transparency and low-intervention winemaking. His meticulous work in the vineyard and cellar has earned Roches Neuves a reputation for producing wines of precision, purity and finesse, helping to elevate Saumur to the attention of collectors and sommeliers worldwide. L’Insolite stands as one of the flagship white cuvées of the domaine, showcasing just how expressive and ageworthy Saumur Blanc can be.
