Tasting Notes
In the glass, Les Mémoires 2020 shows a deep, vibrant ruby with a garnet edge, hinting at both concentration and finesse. The nose is layered and expressive: ripe black plum, elderberry and blackberry meet notes of tobacco leaf, graphite, and a subtle smokiness, all wrapped in a gentle, almost festive spice—think clove, star anise and a whisper of cedar. On the palate, this is structured yet refined, with an immediate sense of power that is kept beautifully in check by a vivid, finely etched acidity. The old vines bring a dense but silken texture, with dark berry fruit, damson, and black cherry interwoven with savoury tones of cocoa, dried herbs, and a touch of earthy minerality from the silex-rich soils. Tannins are firm but ultra-fine, giving the wine both grip and elegance. Production
Les Mémoires comes from a minute, 0.7-hectare parcel in Saumur-Champigny, planted with ungrafted Cabernet Franc vines dating back to 1904—an almost unique heritage for the Loire and beyond. The vineyard sits on silex and tuffeau limestone soils, which bring both tension and a distinct mineral line to the wine. Farmed organically (and following biodynamic principles), the vines are worked by hand, with low yields and careful selection of bunches at harvest to ensure perfect ripeness and health. Grapes are picked by hand and sorted meticulously before a low-intervention vinification: gentle extraction, native yeast fermentation, and élevage in well-chosen neutral vessels that respect the purity of the fruit and the character of the terroir. The result is an unmasked expression of old-vine Cabernet Franc, with no excess oak and a strong sense of place.

Les Mémoires 2020 is a superb partner for refined, savoury dishes: think roast lamb with herbs, slow-braised beef, game birds, or a classic pigeon or duck dish with lentils. It also pairs beautifully with earthy flavours such as mushroom ragouts, truffle risottos, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or matured goat’s cheese from the Loire. Serve at 16–18°C; if opened in its youth, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the wine to unfurl its aromatics and soften the tannins. With more bottle age, a gentle decant to remove any sediment and 30–45 minutes of air will be sufficient.
