Description
Domaine des Chasseignes Sancerre Rouge 2021 is a vivid and elegant Pinot Noir from one of the Loire’s most celebrated terroirs. Crafted in a region better known for white Sancerre, it offers a refreshing, mineral-driven take on red Burgundy’s noble grape and reflects the estate’s modern revival under Aurore Dezat and David Girard.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a bright, translucent red color with the clarity and finesse typical of Pinot Noir. The nose is lifted and charming, with aromas of wild red berries, forest fruit, and a gentle spicy nuance layered over a subtle mineral edge.
The palate is silky and juicy, combining fresh acidity with ripe, sap-filled fruit that makes the wine feel both refreshing and easy to enjoy. A delicate, spicy finish and the chalky-silex imprint of the terroir add length and character. While already highly drinkable, it should hold nicely over the next few years as its savory, mineral details continue to develop.
Production
The vineyards sit on some of Sancerre’s most prized soils, with limestone, clay, and flint (silex) shaping the wine’s expressive, elegant profile. These terroirs are particularly well suited to Pinot Noir, bringing freshness, tension, and a distinct mineral signature to the finished wine.
The estate was brought back into direct production by Aurore Dezat, who restored the family’s winemaking ambition after the grapes had previously been sold to négociants. Together with David Girard, she has guided the domaine through a renaissance focused on showcasing the quality of the site and the purity of the fruit.
Food & Serving
This wine is a natural match for roast poultry, duck breast, charcuterie, mushroom dishes, and grilled salmon, as well as lighter game and savory vegetarian plates. Serve slightly chilled, ideally around 14–16°C, to preserve its freshness and aromatic lift. Decanting is not essential, but a short aeration can help open the wine if enjoyed young.
Producer
Domaine des Chasseignes is a family estate in Sancerre that has been revitalized by Aurore Dezat and her husband, David Girard. Aurore revived the domaine’s own winemaking after a period of selling grapes to négociants, continuing the vision first established by her grandfather. Their work has helped reassert the estate’s place in the region and highlight the strong potential of Pinot Noir in Sancerre.
