Description

Domaine de la Pépière Cru Clisson Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine 2022 is a benchmark dry white from one of the Loire’s most revered Muscadet estates. Sourced from a tiny granite-rich parcel of 50–110-year-old Melon de Bourgogne vines, this cuvée shows just how profound and ageworthy Muscadet can be. First vinified separately in 2005, Cru Clisson has since become a reference for crystalline precision, deep minerality and complexity in the appellation.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Cru Clisson is pale straw with green highlights, bright and limpid, hinting at both youth and tension. The nose is immediately expressive: exotic notes of pineapple and ripe citrus interlace with intense mineral tones, crushed rock, and a distinctly savory, herbal character – think wild fennel, dried herbs and a subtle curry spice in the background. On the palate, the wine is ultra-focused yet textural, with a fine, creamy glide from extended lees aging that never obscures its bracing maritime freshness. Flavors of pineapple, lemon zest and white stone fruit are carried by a firm, linear acidity and a pronounced, salty-mineral spine. It’s very pure, finely knit and elongated, finishing long on stone, citrus peel and a delicate, mouthwatering bitterness. Already beautiful in its youth, this Cru Clisson has the structure and concentration to evolve gracefully for 8–12 years from the vintage, gaining additional complexity, nuttiness and savory depth with time in bottle.

Production
The grapes for this wine come from old Melon de Bourgogne vines, many between 50 and 110 years of age, rooted deeply in the poor, decomposed granite soils of the Clisson cru in the western Loire. This terroir, with its excellent drainage and low fertility, naturally limits yields and concentrates flavor, while the Atlantic influence preserves freshness and aromatic lift. Harvesting is done selectively by hand, allowing only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit to be brought to the cellar. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts, reflecting Domaine de la Pépière’s low-intervention philosophy and giving the wine a vivid sense of place. After fermentation, the wine rests for around two years on fine lees, with regular bâtonnage early on, building texture, complexity and ageworthiness without resorting to oak, and resulting in a Muscadet of remarkable depth and precision.

Food & Serving
This Cru Clisson is a superb partner for the sea: think oysters, clams, mussels marinière, grilled sardines or simply prepared white fish, where its saline cut and mineral backbone shine. It also pairs beautifully with sushi and sashimi, crab, scallops, and more aromatic dishes such as Thai-style fish, lightly spiced shellfish, or vegetable tempura. On land, try it with goat’s cheese, young hard cheeses, or herb-driven dishes like tarragon chicken or fennel and citrus salads. Serve at 10–12°C to balance freshness and aromatic expression. A short decant of 20–30 minutes, or simply opening the bottle a bit before serving, helps the wine unfurl its more subtle mineral and herbal nuances, especially in its first few years.

Producer
Domaine de la Pépière, led for many years by the acclaimed vigneron Marc Ollivier and now by a like-minded team, is widely regarded as one of the great producers of Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine. Founded in the 1980s, the estate was among the pioneers that proved Muscadet could transcend its reputation as a simple, early-drinking white and instead deliver wines of terroir, longevity and real complexity. Working organically and often biodynamically, with a strong focus on single-terroir bottlings such as Clisson, the domaine has been instrumental in the recognition of the Muscadet crus communaux. Their wines are regularly cited by critics and sommeliers as benchmarks for the region, showing just how compelling Melon de Bourgogne can be in the right hands and on the right soils.
