Domaine de la Janasse’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin 2021 is a distinctive, single-vineyard Grenache from the Chaupin parcel, made unfiltered for extra depth and personality. Originally created for the U.S. market, this much-admired cuvée quickly proved so successful that it became a sought-after release in Europe as well. It reflects both the elegance and historic richness of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, while showcasing a notably fresh and lifted style.

Tasting Notes
Expect a deeply coloured red with a vibrant, polished appearance for the vintage. The nose is typically expressive and inviting, with ripe red and black fruit, garrigue herbs, spice, and the subtle complexity that comes from old-vine Grenache and careful élevage. On the palate, Chaupin is known for its remarkable freshness, fine texture, and generous fruit, balanced by the warmth and structure expected from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The unfiltered style adds a little extra dimension and authenticity, while the wine’s concentration and balance suggest very good ageing potential over the medium to long term.

Production
The Chaupin cuvée comes from the Chaupin vineyard in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, part of Domaine de la Janasse’s mosaic of more than sixty parcels across different terroirs. This diversity of soils and exposures is central to the estate’s complexity, and Chaupin stands out as a special parcel selection made entirely from 100% Grenache. The wine is produced using a classic approach, with 22 days of skin contact and maturation split between 30% new oak barrels and 70% foudres to preserve purity and structure.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef daube, duck, venison, or Provençal dishes with herbs and olives. It is also a great match for grilled meats and rich mushroom-based dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if drinking young to help the wine open up and show its full aromatic range.

Producer
Domaine de la Janasse was founded in 1967 when Aimé Sabon took over the family vineyards in Courthézon and chose to bottle wine under his own estate name rather than deliver grapes to the local cooperative. What began with 15 hectares has grown to around 90 hectares, built parcel by parcel from a deep understanding of the region’s potential. Today, with Christophe Sabon and Isabelle Sabon involved in the estate, La Janasse is widely regarded as one of the leading names in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, known for producing some of the appellation’s most respected cuvées.
