Description

Domaine de la Janasse Vieilles Vignes 2019 in magnum format is a powerful, old-vine Châteauneuf-du-Pape crafted for depth, complexity and longevity. Sourced from some of the estate’s oldest parcels, this cuvée delivers a dense core of dark fruit wrapped in refined structure, making it a standout choice for collectors and Rhône enthusiasts alike. Combining the richness of southern Rhône sunshine with the finesse of meticulous winemaking, it is built to evolve beautifully over the next two decades.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Vieilles Vignes shows an inky, deep garnet color with purple reflections, signaling its concentration and youth. The nose is intense and layered: ripe black cherries and blackberries are joined by notes of garrigue (thyme, rosemary, lavender), hints of licorice, dark plum and subtle spice. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, opulent red with a generous core of dark berry fruit and a striking sense of energy. The tannins are formidable yet ripe and polished, giving the wine a firm backbone without sacrificing texture or freshness. Savory herbs, crushed stones and a touch of cocoa and pepper unfold through a long, persistent finish. In magnum, the aging potential is excellent: it will drink well with extended aeration in its youth, but the true rewards will come after 8–10 years, with capacity to evolve gracefully for up to two decades or more.

Production
Domaine de la Janasse’s Vieilles Vignes is drawn primarily from old-vine Grenache parcels, complemented by small portions of Mourvèdre and Syrah, rooted in classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroirs of galets roulés (rounded river stones), sand and clay-limestone soils. These low-yielding, old vines produce naturally concentrated fruit with exceptional aromatic complexity. Grapes are usually harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with a strict selection both in the vineyard and at the cellar. The vinification typically involves a careful, temperature-controlled fermentation, with some whole-cluster use depending on vintage, followed by aging in a mix of foudres and barrels to polish structure without overwhelming the purity of the fruit or the expression of the terroir.

Food & Serving
This 2019 Vieilles Vignes pairs beautifully with robust, flavor-packed dishes: think slow-braised lamb shanks with rosemary, grilled ribeye or côte de boeuf, game birds with wild mushrooms, or hearty stews and daubes from Provençal or Mediterranean-inspired kitchens. It also works wonderfully with aged hard cheeses and dishes featuring Mediterranean herbs and roasted root vegetables. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); in its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and allow the aromatics to fully open, especially from magnum. As it matures, a shorter decant will suffice primarily to remove sediment and let its evolved bouquet emerge.

Producer
Founded in 1973 by Aimé Sabon and now run by his children, Domaine de la Janasse has become one of the benchmark estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the southern Rhône. Located in Courthézon, the domaine has progressively expanded its holdings to include some of the appellation’s finest parcels, many planted to very old vines that deliver exceptional concentration and character. Janasse is renowned for its meticulous vineyard work, respect for terroir and consistently high quality across the range, with Vieilles Vignes standing among its flagship cuvées. Over the years, the estate has earned a reputation for producing some of the most compelling and ageworthy wines in the region, regularly attracting strong critical acclaim and a devoted following among serious Rhône collectors.
