Domaine de la Janasse’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape Chaupin 2023 is a beautifully poised Grenache that showcases the elegance and perfume this historic appellation can deliver. Sourced primarily from the Chaupin lieu-dit with a touch from Janasse, it combines old-vine character, regional depth, and striking finesse in a limited production of around 1,500 cases.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a medium ruby color that hints at its freshness and precision. The bouquet is richly aromatic, opening with sweet red and black berries, followed by classic Provençal notes of herbes de Provence, black olives, pepper, and flowers. On the palate, it is silky and refined, with velvety tannins, superb balance, and a long, graceful finish. This is a wine with excellent aging potential and should develop beautifully over the next two decades, easily rewarding cellaring through 2045. The overall impression is one of harmony and lift rather than power, with Grenache’s natural warmth framed by purity and freshness. Its polished structure and layered aromatics make it especially compelling now, while its depth suggests even more complexity with time in bottle.

Production
Chaupin is a prized site in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and this cuvée comes mainly from that lieu-dit with a small portion from Janasse. The wine is partially destemmed and aged for 12 months in a combination of 70% foudre and 30% demi-muids, a regimen that preserves freshness while adding texture and subtle complexity.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs wonderfully with herb-roasted lamb, duck, game birds, beef tenderloin, and Provençal dishes featuring olives, garlic, and rosemary. It also works well with richer mushroom-based plates and mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for about 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the aromatics and texture to खुलly unfold.
