Description

Domaine de la Butte Perrières Bourgueil 2019 is a refined, single-parcel Cabernet Franc from one of the Loire’s most respected vignerons, Jacky Blot. Sourced from the stoniest part of the estate, this cuvée combines depth, elegance and tension in a style that recalls top Bordeaux while remaining distinctly Bourgueil. The old vines, unique soil profile and minimal-intervention cellar work make Perrières one of the estate’s most characterful and age-worthy reds.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Perrières shows a deep, vivid ruby to garnet hue, with a dark, almost opaque core that hints at concentration. The nose is intense and complex, with dark cherry and blackcurrant (cassis) at the forefront, supported by floral tones of violets, a gentle ethereal lift, and earthy nuances of forest floor, iron filings and damp underbrush. On the palate, this Bourgueil is juicy, fleshy and precise, with ripe but finely etched fruit. The dark berry core is wrapped in savory, graphite-like minerality and a subtle, dark spice from its élevage in small barrels, about 20% of which are new. Tannins are fine-grained and well-knit, giving structure without harshness, while a fresh Loire acidity keeps everything vibrant and mouthwatering. The finish is long, darkly fragrant and slightly saline, suggesting excellent aging potential. With proper cellaring, this 2019 should evolve beautifully over 10–15 years, gaining further complexity and polish.

Production
The Perrières parcel sits on the same underlying limestone formation as Domaine de la Butte’s famed Mi-Pente, but here the rock lies beneath a deep layer of heavy clay. This stony, clay-limestone terroir, combined with roughly 70-year-old Cabernet Franc vines, yields naturally low yields and concentrated, mineral-driven fruit. Harvesting is done by hand with strict selection in the vineyard to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes are brought to the cellar. The bunches are fully destemmed and undergo spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts in a mix of concrete and wooden vats. The wine is then aged in a range of smaller oak barrels, with around 20% new wood, and no interventions in the cellar beyond a prudent use of sulfur, allowing the site and vintage to speak clearly.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile yet gastronomic Cabernet Franc that shines with refined, savory dishes. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, duck breast, veal chops, grilled or braised beef, and game birds, as well as mushroom-based dishes, lentil stews and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Tomme de Savoie. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and finesse. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours helps the wine open up and soften the tannins; as it ages, a gentle 30–60 minute decant is usually sufficient to release its full bouquet.

Producer
Domaine de la Butte, led by the late Jacky Blot and now continued in his spirit, is one of the reference estates for Cabernet Franc in the Loire Valley’s Bourgueil appellation. Founded on impeccably situated hillside vineyards, the domaine has become known for its precise, terroir-expressive single-parcel wines that challenge the notion of what Bourgueil can be. Working with old vines, low yields and organic, minimally interventionist methods, Blot helped elevate Bourgueil to the same conversation as more famous red wine regions. The Perrières cuvée stands among the estate’s flagship wines, regularly cited by critics and enthusiasts alike for its depth, elegance and clear expression of its stony, clay-limestone origins.
