Description
Domaine de Beaurenard Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 2019 is a finely crafted white from one of the appellation’s benchmark estates, showcasing the rare and noble white side of Châteauneuf. Produced from a traditional field blend of Bourboulenc, Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Picpoul and Roussanne, it combines Mediterranean generosity with remarkable finesse and structure. In a region famed for its powerful reds, this white bottling stands out as a coveted rarity, representing only a small fraction of the appellation’s total production yet fully worthy of its most prestigious terroirs.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 shows a luminous, pale gold color with greenish reflections, deepening slightly with a bit of air or time in bottle. The nose is layered and expressive: ripe yellow apple, quince and citrus zest are joined by hints of melon rind, fresh cucumber, white flowers and subtle notes of almond, vanilla bean and fine tea. With air, more exotic nuances of tiny ripe bananas and stone fruits emerge, framed by a delicate, saline minerality.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied, textural white with impressive depth and length. Ripe orchard and citrus fruits are interwoven with gentle spice, a touch of herbal tea and nutty complexity, supported by a lively, mouthwatering freshness. The 14% alcohol is beautifully integrated, lending warmth and weight without heaviness, while a fine phenolic grip gives the wine a lightly tannic, almost gastronomic structure. The finish is long, layered and persistent, suggesting very good aging potential. Enjoyable now with proper aeration, it will continue to evolve gracefully over 7–10 years from the vintage, gaining more honeyed, truffled and nutty complexity with time.
Production
Domaine de Beaurenard sources its Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc from estate vineyards rooted in the classic southern Rhône mosaic of galets roulés (rounded river stones), sandy soils and clay-limestone, which together provide excellent drainage, heat retention and aromatic intensity. The Mediterranean climate, with abundant sunshine and cooling mistral winds, allows the white varieties—Bourboulenc, Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Picpoul and Roussanne—to reach full ripeness while retaining essential acidity and freshness. The grapes are typically harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure optimal maturity and careful selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, gentle pressing and precise temperature control help preserve delicate aromatics, while a combination of stainless steel and well-judged oak maturation (often in large foudres or neutral barrels) adds texture and complexity without overwhelming the fruit. Lees aging further contributes to the wine’s creamy mouthfeel and depth.
Food & Serving
This Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 2019 is an outstanding gastronomic partner, particularly suited to refined Mediterranean and French cuisine. It pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted fish (such as sea bass, turbot or monkfish), shellfish and crustaceans, scallops, lobster and rich seafood stews. It also complements roasted chicken with herbs, veal in cream sauces, truffle dishes, mushroom risottos and aged hard cheeses or mild creamy cheeses. Serve slightly chilled, ideally around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to showcase both its aromatics and texture. Young bottles benefit from being opened and lightly decanted 30–60 minutes before serving, and more mature examples can be given up to a couple of hours in a carafe to allow the full spectrum of aromas and complexity to unfold.
