Domaine Danjean-Berthoux’s Mercurey Les Velleys 2020 is a characterful Burgundy red from the heart of the Côte Chalonnaise, shaped by generations of careful vineyard work. Produced from sustainably farmed parcels in Mercurey and aged in oak, it offers the kind of depth, spice, and structure that make Mercurey one of the most distinctive appellations in the region.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this is a deeply coloured red with a vibrant Burgundy profile and a firm, concentrated core. The nose leans toward spicy dark fruit, layered with toasty oak, roasted nuances, and a savoury edge that reflects both the vineyard and élevage. The palate is powerful and textured, with ripe fruit supported by wood-driven notes, warm spices, and a refined tannic frame. It has the structure to develop nicely over time, gaining complexity and softness with a few years in bottle.

Production
The vines are planted on an east-southeast exposure in Mercurey, where the terroir of the Côte Chalonnaise brings freshness, precision, and Pinot Noir character. Harvesting is aimed at preserving quality fruit, and the wine is matured for 12 months in oak barrels, with 40% new oak used to add definition, texture, and gentle toast without overpowering the fruit.

Food & Serving
This wine is an excellent match for game, slow-cooked dishes, braised meats, and other richly flavoured comfort foods. Serve at around 16-18°C, and decant for a short time if young to let the oak and spice integrate more gracefully.

Domaine Danjean-Berthoux is a family estate based in Jambles, in the centre of the Côte Chalonnaise, with holdings in Givry and Mercurey. The domaine’s modern identity was shaped by Georges Berthoux, expanded over decades by the family, and later carried forward by Pascal Danjean, who now works alongside the next generation. Today, the estate is known for its sustainable approach and for wines that faithfully express the character of their terroir.
