Description
Domaine Clerget Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes 2021 is a wonderfully refined expression of Burgundy Pinot Noir, capturing the trademark silkiness and perfume of this coveted premier cru vineyard. This is a wine for those who appreciate detail and finesse over sheer power, offering a precise, mineral-driven profile that unfolds gracefully in the glass. From a highly regarded family estate, this 2021 Les Charmes marries classic Chambolle elegance with the clarity and freshness of the vintage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a luminous, medium ruby color with delicate garnet reflections at the rim. The nose is immediately seductive, with lifted aromas of wild strawberry, raspberry and red cherry layered over notes of rose petals, violet, subtle spice, and a fine chalky minerality. With air, hints of forest floor, dried herbs and a touch of vanilla or fine oak emerge, adding depth without overshadowing the fruit.
On the palate, this Les Charmes is supple and silky, with ultra-fine tannins and a beautifully woven texture. Red berries and pomegranate lead the flavor profile, supported by floral tones and a discreet, savory earthiness. The acidity is fresh and linear, giving the wine energy and length, while a touch of spice and minerality lingers on the finish. Though already approachable in its youth, the structure and balance suggest an aging potential of 8–12 years from vintage, during which it will gain complexity, softer contours and more tertiary nuance.
Production
Les Charmes is one of Chambolle-Musigny’s most renowned premier cru vineyards, known for its shallow, well-drained limestone and clay soils that give wines of notable finesse and perfume. Domaine Christian Clerget farms these parcels with great care, typically following sustainable, low-intervention practices and favoring manual work in the vineyard, including hand-harvesting to ensure perfect selection of bunches at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the Pinot Noir is traditionally vinified: careful sorting of the grapes, gentle extraction to preserve delicacy, and a measured use of oak, often with a proportion of new French barrels, to support rather than dominate the fruit. The result is a terroir-driven Chambolle-Musigny that clearly reflects the precision and purity of the 2021 vintage.
Food & Serving
This Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes is a superb match for refined, delicately flavored dishes such as roast duck breast, guinea fowl, pigeon, or veal with a light jus. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, truffled poultry, creamy poultry terrines, or mild to medium-hard cheeses like Comté, Tomme or Reblochon. Serve slightly cool, ideally at 15–16°C (59–61°F), to highlight its aromatic lift and finesse. Decanting for about 30–45 minutes in its youth can help open up the bouquet and soften the structure; as it ages, a gentle splash decant just before serving is sufficient to remove any sediment and let the wine express its full complexity.
