Description
Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2020 is a classic, traditionally crafted red from one of the appellation’s most respected family domaines. This cuvée blends 82% Grenache with Mourvèdre, Syrah, Vaccarèse and Counoise, and is aged entirely in concrete for a pure expression of fruit and terroir. The 2020 vintage delivers a wine that is at once vibrant and layered, showcasing the timeless elegance of Châteauneuf-du-Pape from the northern sector of the appellation.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Charvin CNDP 2020 shows a deep, radiant ruby color with subtle violet reflections at the rim. The nose is lifted and precise, opening with ripe red fruits—think red cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry—woven together with darker notes of blackberry, licorice and a swirl of garrigue: dried thyme, lavender and a touch of rosemary.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet remarkably poised, with a core of succulent red and black berry fruit supported by fine, chalky tannins. Layers of spice, anise, and dried Mediterranean herbs unfold with air, giving a sense of both richness and freshness. The acidity is bright and well-integrated, keeping the wine lively and delineated from start to finish. The finish is long, savory and persistent, echoing red fruits, licorice and herbal notes. While already accessible in its youth, this 2020 has the structure and balance to evolve beautifully over 10–15 years, gaining complexity and aromatic detail with time in bottle.
Production
Charvin’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape comes from old, low-yielding vines rooted in the classic terroirs of the appellation—pebbly galets roulés, sandy parcels and clay-limestone soils that collectively bring ripeness, fragrance and structure. The grapes are harvested by hand at optimal maturity, with careful sorting to ensure only pristine fruit makes it to the cellar. Vinification follows a resolutely traditional approach: whole clusters are fermented with indigenous yeasts, extracting color, aroma and fine tannins gently rather than aggressively. The wine is then aged for about 21 months in concrete tanks, without new oak, preserving the clarity of fruit, the imprint of the vintage and the distinctive Charvin style of finesse over sheer power.
Food & Serving
This 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape pairs beautifully with hearty Mediterranean-inspired dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, grilled or braised beef, duck with berry or fig accents, and game birds. It also complements rich vegetable dishes—ratatouille, roasted root vegetables, or mushroom-based plates—as well as aged hard cheeses. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth helps the aromatics unfurl and the tannins soften; as the wine gains age, a shorter decant or a gentle splash into a carafe will be sufficient.
Producer
Domaine Charvin is a sixth-generation, family-run estate and a benchmark name in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, located in the cooler northern reaches of the appellation near Orange. Known for its staunchly traditional philosophy, Charvin has long favored whole-cluster fermentation, concrete aging and minimal intervention to craft wines of energy, precision and terroir transparency. The domaine is widely respected among critics and collectors for producing Grenache-driven reds that combine concentration with lift and elegance, often aging gracefully for decades. In a region where power can dominate, Charvin stands out for its refined, harmonious style and its consistent role in showcasing the more nuanced, aromatic side of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
