Description

Domaine Charles Joguet Clos de la Dioterie Chinon Rouge Bio 2019 is one of the Loire Valley’s benchmark expressions of Cabernet Franc, drawn from one of Chinon’s most storied single vineyards. Certified organic and sourced from some of the estate’s oldest vines, this cuvée marries depth and concentration with the lifted freshness that defines great Loire reds. The parcel of Clos de la Dioterie has been documented since the Middle Ages and is counted among the most celebrated sites in the region, lending the wine a rare historical gravitas.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Clos de la Dioterie shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with hints of purple at the rim, reflecting both youth and concentration. The nose opens with pure, expressive Cabernet Franc aromatics: black cherry, ripe redcurrant, and wild raspberry layered with graphite, crushed violets, dried herbs, and subtle notes of cedar and spice. With air, more complex nuances emerge—tobacco leaf, forest floor, and a touch of cocoa. On the palate, the wine is structured and precise yet remarkably refined, with a core of dark, juicy fruit wrapped in finely etched tannins. Flavors of black cherry, plum, and red berries are intertwined with savory tones of pencil shavings, pepper, and leaf tobacco, supported by lively, mouthwatering acidity. The finish is long, mineral, and focused, echoing with notes of spice and cool stone. This is a Chinon built for the cellar: while already enjoyable with a proper decant, it has excellent aging potential, evolving gracefully over 10–15 years or more, gaining additional complexity, silkier texture, and tertiary notes of leather, truffle, and dried flowers.

Production
Clos de la Dioterie lies immediately adjacent to the Domaine Charles Joguet estate, forming a monopole vineyard in their exclusive ownership. The terroir combines a clay-rich topsoil with subsoils streaked with mica and limestone, offering both water retention and excellent drainage, and compelling the deep-rooted Cabernet Franc vines—some up to 100 years old—to dig deep for nutrients and minerality. Yields are naturally low, giving very concentrated fruit, and the grapes are picked by hand with strict selection in the vineyard. After harvest, the berries undergo a cool pre-fermentation maceration of around ten days, followed by a gentle fermentation on the skins of about four weeks to extract fine, silky tannins and aromatic complexity. Free-run and press wines are initially kept separate, then carefully blended in an optimal proportion. The wine is subsequently aged for approximately 15 months, traditionally in French oak, allowing the malolactic fermentation to complete and the structure to harmonize, all while preserving the signature freshness and precision of Chinon.

Food & Serving
This Chinon Rouge is a superb partner for refined, savory dishes. It pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, duck breast, game birds, or braised beef, and it is equally compelling alongside hearty dishes such as mushroom ragout, lentil stew, or truffle-infused risotto. Loire goat cheeses, aged semi-hard cheeses, and charcuterie also make excellent companions. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight both fruit and aromatic detail. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to open the bouquet and soften the tannins; older bottles will require a gentler, shorter decant to remove sediment while preserving delicate, evolved aromas.

Producer
Domaine Charles Joguet is one of the reference estates of Chinon and a key contributor to the global recognition of Loire Cabernet Franc. Founded in the 1950s by Charles Joguet, the domaine was among the first in the region to bottle single-vineyard wines, emphasizing terroir differentiation long before it became standard practice. Over the decades, Joguet’s meticulous vineyard work, focus on low yields, and commitment to organic farming have positioned the estate at the forefront of quality in the appellation. Today, the domaine is renowned for its ability to craft age-worthy, complex reds that faithfully express their origins, with Clos de la Dioterie standing as one of the crown jewels of Chinon and a benchmark for serious, cellar-worthy Cabernet Franc from the Loire.
