Description
Domaine Aurélie Berthod Beaune 1er Cru 2018 is a refined red Burgundy that captures the elegance and depth of Pinot Noir from one of the region’s most historic towns. Crafted in small quantities, this premier cru offers a beautiful balance between ripe fruit, fine tannins and classic Burgundian finesse. It is a standout choice for those seeking a nuanced, terroir-driven wine from a rising star in Beaune. Its unique selling point lies in the combination of a high-quality premier cru site with the precision and energy of a young, ambitious estate. The 2018 vintage brought generous ripeness and concentration, while Aurélie’s careful, artisanal approach preserves freshness and detail in the glass. Though the domaine itself is young, the vineyards sit on land with centuries of Burgundian heritage, and the wine already shows the pedigree to stand alongside more established names.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Beaune 1er Cru 2018 typically shows a bright, translucent ruby to garnet hue, with a vibrant rim that hints at both youth and finesse. The nose is expressive and inviting: red cherries, wild strawberries and ripe raspberries are layered with notes of violet, rose petal and a touch of forest floor. Subtle hints of spice, fine oak, and a whisper of dried herbs add complexity as it opens in the glass.
On the palate, this Pinot Noir is supple yet structured, with silky tannins and a fresh, well-integrated acidity that keeps the wine lively. You can expect juicy red berry and cherry fruit at the core, supported by notes of cranberry, baking spice, and a gentle earthiness typical of Beaune premier cru. The oak is judicious, framing the wine rather than dominating it, with a fine, almost chalky minerality running through the finish. While already approachable now, especially with a bit of air, this 2018 has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully for 8–12 years from vintage, gaining more savory, truffle and sous-bois nuances over time.
Production
The grapes for Domaine Aurélie Berthod Beaune 1er Cru 2018 come from carefully tended premier cru parcels on the slopes around Beaune, where clay-limestone soils, good drainage and varied exposures give Pinot Noir both aromatic lift and depth. The vineyards are worked with close attention to detail, with a focus on limiting yields and picking at optimal ripeness to preserve balance and purity of fruit. Harvest is carried out by hand, allowing strict sorting of the bunches in the vineyard and cellar. In the winery, Aurélie favors a Burgundy tradition that respects the character of each parcel: gentle extraction, temperature-controlled fermentation, and maturation in French oak barrels (with a measured proportion of new oak) to add complexity and texture without overshadowing the fruit. The result is a precise, site-expressive wine that speaks clearly of Beaune’s terroir.
Food & Serving
This Beaune 1er Cru 2018 is a versatile and food-friendly Burgundy that shines with refined yet flavorful dishes. It pairs beautifully with roasted duck breast, herb-crusted lamb, coq au vin, or veal with mushrooms. It also works wonderfully with game birds, charcuterie, and earthy vegetarian dishes such as mushroom risotto, lentil ragout or roasted root vegetables. Serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F) to highlight its delicacy and aromatic complexity. A light decant of 30–45 minutes is recommended in its youth to help the wine open up, while older bottles can simply be gently poured into large Burgundy stems shortly before serving.
Producer
Domaine Aurélie Berthod is a relatively young but already acclaimed estate based in Pernand-Vergelesses, in the heart of Burgundy. After an early career in business and marketing, Aurélie returned to Burgundy and, in 2017, seized the opportunity to acquire 5.5 hectares of vineyards across Pernand-Vergelesses, Chorey-lès-Beaune and Beaune, founding her eponymous domaine. Despite its recent creation, the domaine quickly attracted attention: wines from the very first 2017 vintage earned top places in blind tastings, distinctions such as MAJOR at the Tastevinage in Château du Clos de Vougeot, gold medals at the FEMINALISE competition, and stars in the influential Guide Hachette des Vins. Today, Domaine Aurélie Berthod is recognized as one of the exciting new names to follow in the Côte de Beaune, combining serious vineyard work with an elegant, modern interpretation of classic Burgundy.
