Description

Domaine A.F. Gros Pommard 1er Cru Les Arvelets 2018 is a refined expression of Côte de Beaune Pinot Noir from one of Pommard’s most characterful premier cru vineyards. This bottling combines the power and structure Pommard is known for with an elegant, almost Vosne-like finesse that reflects the Gros family’s touch. The warm 2018 vintage adds depth and generosity, making this a particularly inviting and ageworthy release. Its unique selling point lies in the marriage of a top Pommard premier cru site with the Burgundian heritage of the Gros family, whose roots run deep in nearby Vosne-Romanée. Les Arvelets is prized for giving wines of both intensity and precision, and in 2018 it has produced a Pinot Noir that is at once concentrated, velvety, and beautifully aromatic. Historically, Pommard has been synonymous with structured, cellar-worthy Burgundy, and this cuvée honours that reputation while offering a more polished, modern expression of the appellation.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Pommard 1er Cru Les Arvelets shows a deep, vibrant ruby hue with youthful purple highlights, signalling both concentration and freshness. Swirling reveals impressive density and slow-forming tears on the glass, hinting at ripe fruit and a solid core. The nose opens with dark cherries and black raspberries, layered with ripe strawberries and a hint of wild plum. With air, more complex notes emerge: rose petal, violet, sweet spice, a touch of vanilla, and subtle forest undergrowth, all wrapped in a fine cloak of well-integrated oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied for Pinot Noir, with a generous, layered fruit profile: juicy black cherry, redcurrant, and raspberry coulis, framed by refined tannins that are firm yet silky. Mineral undertones and a subtle savory edge—think dried herbs and a faint hint of cocoa—add depth, while the acidity keeps everything lifted and precise. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering notes of red fruit, spice and a delicate, stony freshness. The 2018 vintage has given this wine a slightly more opulent texture than cooler years, but it retains the structure typical of Pommard 1er Cru. It is already approachable with some aeration, yet it has the balance and backbone to age gracefully for 10–15 years from the vintage, continuing to develop more tertiary nuances of truffle, leather, and sous-bois over time.

Production
Les Arvelets is a premier cru vineyard on the Pommard slope, benefiting from a mix of clay-limestone soils with good drainage and a favourable south to south-east exposure. This terroir produces Pinot Noir with both concentration and tension, capturing the darker, more structured side of Pommard while preserving aromatic lift. At Domaine A.F. Gros, vineyard work is meticulous, with careful canopy management and green harvesting when needed to ensure even ripening and balanced yields. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal maturity, sorted rigorously in the vineyard and again at the cellar door to retain only the healthiest, ripest bunches. Vinification typically involves a traditional Burgundian approach: gentle destemming (sometimes with a proportion of whole clusters depending on the year), a cold maceration to extract colour and aroma, followed by fermentation in open vats with regular punch-downs or pump-overs. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels—often with a judicious proportion of new oak—to bring finesse, texture, and subtle spice without overwhelming the purity of the fruit or the expression of terroir.

Food & Serving
This Pommard 1er Cru Les Arvelets 2018 pairs beautifully with richly flavoured dishes that can stand up to its structure and intensity. Think roast duck with cherry or berry sauces, herb-crusted lamb, veal in mushroom jus, or classic Burgundian dishes such as boeuf bourguignon and coq au vin. It also shines alongside game birds, roasted root vegetables, and earthy mushroom-based dishes, including truffle risotto and wild mushroom ragout. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) for optimal expression of fruit and aromatics. Decanting for 45–60 minutes in its youth will help the tannins soften and allow the bouquet to fully open; as it matures, a shorter decant or simply serving it in large Burgundy stems will be sufficient.

Producer
Domaine A.F. Gros is part of the esteemed Gros family of Burgundian vignerons, whose history in the Côte d’Or stretches back several generations and is particularly anchored in Vosne-Romanée. Founded by Anne-Françoise Gros, the estate brings together parcels inherited from both the Gros and Parent families, resulting in an enviable mosaic of vineyards across the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, including top sites in Pommard. The domaine has earned a reputation for producing wines that marry precision and elegance with clear, terroir-driven character, often displaying a supple, seductive texture that has become something of a house signature. Within the region, Domaine A.F. Gros is recognised for its careful vineyard work, thoughtful use of oak, and consistently high quality, with numerous critical accolades over the years reinforcing its status as one of the notable addresses in contemporary Burgundy.
