Description
From a prime Premier Cru parcel on the southern side of Beaune, bordering the famed village of Pommard, Domaine A.F. Gros’ Beaune 1er Cru Les Boucherottes 2020 is a pure, expressive take on Pinot Noir from one of Burgundy’s most quietly distinguished climats. This cuvée marries the finesse and red-fruited charm of Beaune with the depth and texture that come from its clay-rich soils. Elegant yet substantial, it offers a classic Burgundy profile with a touch of modern precision and polish.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Les Boucherottes shows a luminous, medium ruby colour with youthful vibrancy at the rim. The nose is immediately inviting, opening with bright red cherry, pomegranate and raspberry, layered with hints of baking spice, dried rose petals, and a subtle earthy undertone that nods to forest floor and warm soil.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and finely etched, with a silken, velvety tannin structure that frames the fruit rather than overwhelms it. Juicy red berries and cherry fruit are lifted by a lively acidity, while a discreet mineral thread brings tension and length. The finish is long, balanced and quietly persistent, revealing gentle notes of spice and earth as it lingers. While already approachable in its youth for its charm and purity of fruit, this 2020 has the structure and balance to develop further complexity over the next 8–12 years under good cellaring conditions.
Production
Les Boucherottes is a well-situated Premier Cru at the southern end of Beaune, right on the border with Pommard, where slightly heavier, clay-rich soils over limestone give Pinot Noir more depth, texture and a touch of Pommard-like gravitas. The vines draw on this mix of clay and mineral subsoil to produce small, concentrated berries with naturally good balance. Harvesting at Domaine A.F. Gros is typically done by hand, allowing rigorous selection of perfectly ripe clusters directly in the vineyard and again at the winery. Vinification focuses on preserving fruit purity and terroir expression: gentle extraction, temperature-controlled fermentations, and judicious use of French oak—often with a portion of new barrels—bring polish and structure without masking the vineyard character. The result is a Beaune Premier Cru that captures both the finesse of the appellation and the substance of its particular site.
Food & Serving
This Beaune 1er Cru is a versatile partner at the table, particularly well suited to refined yet flavourful dishes. Consider pairing it with roast duck breast, herb-crusted lamb, coq au vin, veal chops, or classic Burgundian fare such as boeuf bourguignon. It also works beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, truffle risottos, poultry with morels, and semi-soft cheeses like Comté or Tome. Serve at 14–16°C to highlight its aromatic lift and fine texture. In its youth, a gentle decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up and soften the tannins; as it gains bottle age, a brief, careful decant just to remove any sediment is sufficient.
