Description
De Fermo Concrete Bianco 2024 is a characterful Italian white wine from the rolling hills of Abruzzo, crafted to showcase purity, freshness and texture. Made from a blend of local white grapes (“Uve Bianche”) and raised entirely in concrete, it captures the vibrancy of the terroir without the imprint of oak. This thoughtful, low-intervention approach pays homage to Abruzzo’s long winemaking tradition while delivering a wine that feels distinctly modern and artisan in spirit.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, De Fermo Concrete Bianco 2024 shows a bright straw-yellow colour with subtle green reflections, signalling its youth and freshness. The nose is clean and expressive, offering aromas of citrus zest, ripe pear and green apple, layered with notes of wild herbs, chamomile and a faint saline breeze that hints at its coastal-influenced origins.
On the palate, this is a precise, energetic white with a medium body and a refreshing backbone of acidity. Flavours of lemon, white peach and crunchy stone fruit are joined by hints of almond, fennel and wet stone, giving a gentle savoury edge and a long, mineral-driven finish. The texture is notably silky for a wine without oak, thanks to the time spent in concrete, which adds weight and harmony without masking fruit. Best enjoyed in its first 3–4 years, it will gain a touch of complexity and roundness with another year or two in bottle, while remaining at its best for immediate, pleasurable drinking.
Production
The grapes for Concrete Bianco are sourced from organically farmed vineyards in Abruzzo, where hillside plots benefit from a mix of clay-limestone soils, good drainage and cooling breezes from both the Adriatic Sea and the Apennine mountains. These conditions help preserve acidity and aromatic intensity in the local white varieties. Harvesting is typically done by hand, allowing careful selection of bunches at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the fruit is gently pressed and fermented with minimal intervention in temperature-controlled concrete tanks, often with native yeasts. Concrete provides micro-oxygenation without adding flavour, allowing the pure character of the grapes and terroir to shine. The wine is then aged on fine lees in concrete for added texture and complexity, before a light clarification and bottling with minimal handling.
Food & Serving
De Fermo Concrete Bianco 2024 is an excellent partner for seafood dishes such as grilled prawns, seared scallops, lemon-scented fish, or spaghetti alle vongole. It also pairs beautifully with fresh goat cheese, burrata, vegetable antipasti, risotti with spring vegetables or herbs, and light white meats like roast chicken with lemon and thyme. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 8–10°C (46–50°F), to allow its aromatics and texture to open up. Decanting is not essential, but pouring the wine into a carafe 15–20 minutes before serving can help it relax and reveal extra layers of minerality and subtle herbal notes.
Producer
De Fermo is a small, highly regarded estate in Abruzzo known for its artisanal, low-intervention approach and its commitment to expressing the character of local varieties and terroir. Working primarily with organically or biodynamically farmed vineyards, the winery emphasises handwork in the vines and gentle winemaking in the cellar, favouring concrete, large casks and minimal manipulation over new oak and heavy extraction. Over the years, De Fermo has gained a strong reputation among sommeliers and wine enthusiasts for producing wines that are both authentic and refined, helping to highlight Abruzzo as a source of distinctive, terroir-driven wines that stand confidently alongside Italy’s more famous regions.
