Description
David Moret Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières 2021 is a poised, mineral-driven white Burgundy that captures the finesse and generosity of this famed Premier Cru. Crafted from 100% Chardonnay and vinified with meticulous attention to detail, it offers both immediate pleasure and serious cellaring potential. Les Genevrières is renowned for delivering some of Meursault’s most refined and complex expressions, and this 2021 bottling is a precise, chiselled example of the terroir.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Meursault 1er Cru shines with a bright, pale gold hue and subtle green reflections, hinting at both freshness and concentration. The nose is beautifully layered: ripe lemon and white peach weave together with notes of pear, acacia blossom, and a quiet but unmistakable core of wet stone. Subtle hints of toasted hazelnut, fresh butter, and a delicate touch of vanilla from judicious oak aging add depth without dominating the fruit.
On the palate, the wine is both silky and taut, with a fine line of acidity that carries the flavours long across the tongue. Citrus zest, stone fruit and a saline, chalky minerality are wrapped in a creamy texture that feels luxurious but never heavy. The finish is long and precise, revealing whispers of almond, spice and a lingering, mouthwatering freshness. While already expressive in its youth, this 2021 has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully over the next 8–12 years, gaining even more complexity and tertiary nuances with time in the cellar.
Production
Les Genevrières is one of Meursault’s most storied Premier Cru vineyards, known for its well-drained, limestone-rich soils with a mix of clay that lends both tension and breadth to the Chardonnay. The slope and exposition allow for excellent ripening while preserving acidity, giving wines that are at once generous and finely etched. David Moret works with low-yielding vines, harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to ensure pristine fruit. In the cellar, the grapes are gently pressed and the must is allowed to ferment in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, to build texture and complexity while maintaining purity. Extended lees aging with careful bâtonnage adds creaminess and aromatic nuance, and the wine is bottled with minimal intervention to preserve the character of site and vintage.
Food & Serving
This Meursault 1er Cru is a superb partner for refined dishes such as butter-poached lobster, seared scallops, turbot or sole with a beurre blanc, and roasted chicken with morel cream sauce. It also pairs beautifully with richer poultry terrines, veal in delicate cream sauces, and aged, nutty cheeses like Comté or Beaufort. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight its tension and aromatic complexity. A gentle decant of 30–45 minutes, or simply opening the bottle ahead of serving, will help the wine unfurl its full range of flavours and texture.
Producer
David Moret is a respected micro-négociant based in Beaune, known for crafting small quantities of high-quality white Burgundy from some of the Côte de Beaune’s most prized vineyards. After years working behind the scenes in the wine trade, he established his own label, focusing on long-term relationships with growers who share his dedication to low yields and meticulous vineyard work. In the cellar, his philosophy is one of precision and restraint: careful pressing, fermentation and élevage in carefully selected French oak, and minimal intervention to let terroir speak clearly. Moret’s wines have earned a strong following among Burgundy lovers for their purity, balance and ability to express the distinct character of each cru, with his Meursault bottlings—especially from Premier Crus like Les Genevrières—standing out as particularly refined and sought after.
