Description
David Léclapart Champagne l'Aphrodisiaque V17 is a rare, characterful Champagne crafted from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grown exclusively in the Premier Cru vineyards of Trépail in the Montagne de Reims. Produced in tiny quantities from a mere three hectares of meticulously farmed vines, it captures the essence of a singular place and a deeply committed vigneron. L’Aphrodisiaque sits among Léclapart’s most expressive cuvées, shaped by biodynamic farming, low intervention in the cellar and an almost spiritual dedication to purity and energy in the glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, l'Aphrodisiaque V17 shows a luminous, pale gold hue with a fine, persistent bead that speaks of careful élevage and healthy, ripe fruit. The nose is both refined and inviting, opening with citrus oil, green apple and ripe pear, then unfolding into layers of white flowers, chalk dust, roasted hazelnut and a subtle hint of brioche and spice from its time in used barrels.
On the palate, this is precise yet sensual, with a tense, chalk-driven backbone typical of Trépail’s limestone soils. The attack is vibrant and mouthwatering, offering lemon zest, crunchy orchard fruit and a touch of wild raspberry from the Pinot Noir, followed by more complex notes of almond, fresh cream and delicate pastry. The texture is finely woven—creamy but never heavy—with a very low dosage allowing the natural salinity and vertical acidity to shine. Already highly engaging, it has the structure and minerality to age gracefully for 8–12 years from the vintage, gaining further complexity, nuttiness and depth with time in bottle.
Production
The grapes for l'Aphrodisiaque V17 come 100% from Premier Cru parcels around the village of Trépail in the Montagne de Reims, a terroir renowned for its chalk-rich soils and cool exposition that favor vibrant, mineral Chardonnay and finely structured Pinot Noir. Farmed biodynamically, the vineyards are treated as a living ecosystem: no synthetic chemicals are used, the lunar calendar guides key tasks, and natural preparations are employed to nurture soil life and vine health. Harvesting is done by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve freshness and balance. In the cellar, David Léclapart allows partial spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, and the wines are aged in used barrels to bring nuance without overt oak flavor. Malolactic fermentation is allowed, contributing texture and harmony, while sulfur additions are kept to an absolute minimum and dosage is always low, resulting in an elegant, dry and highly expressive Champagne that speaks clearly of its origin.
Food & Serving
L'Aphrodisiaque V17 is an outstanding partner for refined cuisine, especially dishes that highlight texture and subtle flavors. Think oysters with a mignonette of citrus, scallop carpaccio, or turbot with beurre blanc and seasonal vegetables. Poultry with morels, finely sliced jamón ibérico, or aged Comté and hard cheeses also make superb matches, as the wine’s chalky tension and gentle creaminess complement both delicate seafood and richer, savory dishes. Serve well chilled but not icy—around 9–11°C (48–52°F)—to allow the aromatics and texture to fully unfold. A gentle decanting or opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving can help the wine express its full complexity, especially if enjoyed in a larger white wine glass rather than a narrow flute.
Producer
David Léclapart took over his family estate in 1996 in the small village of Trépail, in the heart of the Montagne de Reims, and quickly became one of Champagne’s most distinctive and respected grower-producers. From the outset, he committed to a radically different path, embracing biodynamic viticulture long before it was fashionable in the region, with a philosophy centered on capturing the life and energy of his vineyards rather than manipulating the wines in the cellar. His tiny three-hectare domaine is planted primarily to Chardonnay, which he uses as a canvas for a series of highly individual cuvées—L’Amateur, L’Artiste, L’Apôtre, L’Alchimiste and L’Aphrodisiaque—each expressing a different facet of his terroir and approach. Today, Léclapart is regarded as a reference point for artisanal, low-intervention Champagne, with a following among collectors and sommeliers who seek wines of precision, purity and profound character.
