Darioush Winery, Signature Merlot, 2019

Darioush Signature Merlot 2019 is a luxurious, precision-crafted Napa Valley red that balances richness with remarkable elegance. Made by winemaker Hope Goldie, it showcases the refined, modern style for which Darioush is known, with fruit sourced from some of southern Napa Valley’s most characterful sites.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a deep ruby colour that hints at its concentration. The nose is seductive and layered, opening with dark plum, blackcurrant and cherry, then unfolding into notes of chocolate, spice and a subtle touch of vanilla from oak ageing. On the palate, it is full-bodied and velvety, with ripe fruit, fresh acidity and fine, polished tannins working together in a dense but precise structure. The finish is long, harmonious and classically Napa in feel, with enough depth and balance to suggest excellent cellaring potential over the next several years.

Production
The grapes are selected from distinct parcels in southern Napa Valley, including Oak Knoll, Mount Veeder and Yountville, where varying microclimates and soil types add both complexity and balance to the final wine. The blend is primarily Merlot, with a small proportion of Malbec to bring additional depth and structure. Ageing in a high percentage of new French oak adds richness and complexity without overpowering the fruit.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for grilled or roasted beef, lamb, braised short ribs and other richly flavoured dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes if drinking young to allow the aromatics and texture to open fully.
