Description

Damilano Barolo Lecinquevigne 2016 is a finely crafted expression of classic Barolo, uniting fruit from five select vineyards into one harmonious cuvée. This is a wine that captures the elegance and nuance of Nebbiolo in a benchmark vintage, offering both immediate pleasure and serious aging potential. Lecinquevigne stands out for its balance of perfume, structure and silkiness, echoing the long tradition of Barolo as one of Italy’s most noble reds.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Barolo shows a luminous ruby red core with characteristic orange-tinged reflections at the rim, a sign of both the grape and its early evolution in bottle. The nose is intense and layered, opening with developed notes of dried rose petals, leather and tobacco, then unfolding to reveal hints of violet, tar, and subtle spice. On the palate, Lecinquevigne 2016 is full-bodied yet refined, with an enveloping texture that wraps around Nebbiolo’s firm tannic backbone. Flavors of red cherry, dried raspberry and plum are interwoven with earthy undertones, licorice, and savory herbal notes. The tannins are abundant but polished, giving a sense of softness and depth, and the finish is long, persistent and gently mouthcoating. 2016 is considered an excellent, classically styled vintage in Barolo, and this wine is built to age gracefully for 10–15+ years from the vintage, gaining further complexity of truffle, forest floor and spice with time in the cellar.

Production
Lecinquevigne (“the five vineyards”) is sourced from several carefully selected sites across the Barolo appellation in Piedmont, each contributing a different facet of Nebbiolo’s character—elegant aromatics from higher-altitude, calcareous slopes and depth and structure from clay- and marl-rich parcels. The continental climate, with hot days, cool nights and foggy autumns, helps Nebbiolo ripen slowly while retaining acidity and aromatic finesse. Grapes are typically hand-harvested to ensure careful selection of bunches, then gently crushed and fermented on the skins to extract color, tannin and aroma. Traditional maceration and temperature-controlled fermentation are followed by extended aging in oak—often large Slavonian casks and/or older barriques—to allow the wine’s structure to soften and the complex bouquet to develop, before final bottle aging prior to release.

Food & Serving
This Barolo is a superb match for rich, savory dishes such as braised beef, osso buco, slow-cooked lamb, game birds, and truffle-laced risotto or tagliatelle. It also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Castelmagno. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to let the aromatics fully express themselves. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially in its youth, to help the bouquet open and the tannins relax, revealing the wine’s full complexity and elegance.

Producer
Damilano is one of Barolo’s historic family estates, with roots in Piedmontese viticulture dating back to the late 19th century. Over generations, the winery has become known for its meticulous focus on Nebbiolo and its ability to express the distinct personalities of Barolo’s top crus and vineyards. Based in the heart of the Barolo region, Damilano has played an important role in elevating the reputation of Barolo on the international stage, and is particularly respected for its combination of traditional winemaking methods with a precise, modern touch. Their Baroli, including Lecinquevigne, regularly receive strong recognition from critics and enthusiasts alike, reinforcing Damilano’s position as a benchmark producer in Piemonte.
