Description
Crozes-Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert by Paul Jaboulet Aîné is a benchmark northern Rhône Syrah, offering depth, finesse, and the kind of old-vine character that makes the appellation so compelling. Sourced from one of the most historic single vineyards in Crozes-Hermitage, this 2015 release reflects both the power of the vintage and the elegance that has long defined Jaboulet’s style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby color with hints of purple at the rim. The nose is expressive and layered, with dark berries, blackberry, black cherry, violets, pepper, olive tapenade, and a touch of smoked meat or cured spice. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied with firm but polished tannins, fresh acidity, and a savory mineral edge that carries through the finish.
The 2015 vintage lends extra ripeness and concentration, so expect a wine that is both generous and structured. With time in bottle, it can develop further complexity, revealing more earth, leather, game, and truffle notes over the next 8–12 years, and often longer in the best cellars.
Production
Domaine de Thalabert is one of the oldest and most respected vineyards in Crozes-Hermitage, planted on alluvial and stony terraces that benefit from good drainage and excellent exposure. The terroir is well suited to Syrah, combining warmth from the Rhône climate with the freshness needed to preserve balance and aromatic lift. Harvest is typically carried out by hand to select healthy fruit at optimal ripeness, and vinification aims to preserve the purity of the grape and the character of the site, often including traditional fermentation and maturation in oak to build texture and depth.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, game birds, and dishes with mushrooms or black olives. It also works well with aged cheeses and richly seasoned Mediterranean cuisine. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the aromas and structure to open fully.
Producer
Paul Jaboulet Aîné is one of the most storied names in the Rhône Valley, founded in 1834 and long associated with some of the region’s finest wines. The house is particularly respected for its classic interpretations of northern Rhône Syrah and for its commitment to historic vineyards such as Domaine de Thalabert. Over the years, Jaboulet has earned a strong reputation for quality, consistency, and an ability to express the distinct character of each appellation.
