Description
Cristia Vieilles Vignes 2007 in magnum is a powerful yet remarkably refined Châteauneuf-du-Pape, crafted entirely from old-vine Grenache. This is widely regarded as one of the finest wines ever produced by Domaine de Cristia, combining sheer concentration with a sense of lift and elegance. Sourced from some of the estate’s oldest parcels, it captures the soul of Southern Rhône Grenache in a particularly outstanding vintage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2007 Vieilles Vignes shows a deep, dense ruby color with garnet reflections that hint at its evolving complexity, especially in magnum format. The nose is opulent and expressive, bursting with black raspberries, caramelized cherries, violets, lavender, and the classic garrigue of the Southern Rhône—thyme, wild herbs, and a touch of warm earth.
On the palate, this is full-bodied and massively concentrated, yet it remains surprisingly graceful and poised. Layers of ripe black and red fruit are wrapped in notes of spice, licorice, and floral tones, with a velvety texture and impressive depth. The finish is long, savory, and decadent without ever feeling heavy. Still described as “an infant” even years after release, this magnum has excellent aging potential and can comfortably evolve for 15–20 years from the original tasting note, offering tertiary nuances of leather, truffle, and dried herbs as it matures.
Production
Domaine de Cristia’s Vieilles Vignes cuvée is sourced from very old Grenache vines rooted in the classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir of galets roulés (large rounded stones), sandy soils, and clay, which together contribute both richness and finesse. The old vines naturally produce low yields, giving exceptional concentration and purity of fruit. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to protect the fragile, old-vine berries. Vinification focuses on gentle extraction to preserve the elegance of Grenache, followed by maturation in a mix of barrel sizes, including some new oak, to add nuance without overshadowing the fruit. The result is a wine that marries power, aromatic complexity, and textural polish.
Food & Serving
Cristia Vieilles Vignes 2007 is a natural match for rich, Mediterranean-inflected dishes: slow-braised lamb shank with rosemary, Provençal stews, duck with cherry or fig, or grilled ribeye with herb butter. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffled dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Manchego. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F). Given its concentration and age, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the bouquet to fully open and the tannins to integrate, especially when pouring from magnum.
