Description

Cos d’Estournel 2009 is a benchmark Left Bank Bordeaux from one of Saint-Estèphe’s most revered estates, crafted in the outstanding 2009 vintage. This is a powerful yet polished grand vin, celebrated for its opulence, depth and remarkable balance between richness and freshness. Classified as a Second Growth in the 1855 Classification, Cos d’Estournel has long been considered one of the Médoc’s leading estates, often rivaling First Growths in both quality and longevity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Cos d’Estournel 2009 shows a deep, opaque garnet color with a gently bricking rim starting to hint at its evolution. The nose is intensely aromatic and complex, with layers of blackcurrant pastille, black cherry and blueberry compote wrapped in notes of redcurrant jelly, rose hip, dried herbs, forest floor, graphite shavings and exotic spices. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, richly textured and luxuriously fruited, yet impeccably composed. Ripe cassis, kirsch, plum and dark berry flavors unfold in waves, supported by beautifully integrated, velvety tannins and vibrant acidity that keeps the wine fresh and precise. Subtle undertones of cedar, cigar box, incense and Indian spice emerge with air, leading to a very long, savory and spicy finish. Already drinking superbly, it still has outstanding aging potential: properly cellared, this 2009 can continue to develop greater nuance and tertiary complexity over the next 10–20 years.

Production
Cos d’Estournel lies at the southern edge of Saint-Estèphe, directly bordering Pauillac, on a privileged terroir of deep gravel ridges over clay and limestone that is ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. The grand vin is typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot playing a supporting role, and smaller portions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot contributing complexity. Grapes are picked by hand in small harvest teams, parcel by parcel, to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection in the vineyard and at the sorting tables. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, allowing precise extraction of color, flavor and tannin before the wine is matured in French oak barriques, a significant proportion of them new, to bring structure, polish and subtle spice without overpowering the purity of the fruit.

Food & Serving
Cos d’Estournel 2009 is an outstanding partner for refined, richly flavored dishes such as dry-aged ribeye, roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, duck breast, venison or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with classic French cuisine—think beef Wellington, truffled poultry, wild mushroom dishes or mature hard cheeses like Comté and aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and textural finesse. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended to allow the wine to fully open and reveal its layered bouquet and long, resonant finish.

Producer
Cos d’Estournel is one of Bordeaux’s most iconic estates, located in Saint-Estèphe on the Left Bank of the Gironde. Founded in the early 19th century by the visionary Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel—nicknamed the “Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe” for his pioneering export of wines to India—the château is instantly recognizable by its exotic, pagoda-like architecture. As a Second Growth in the 1855 Classification, Cos d’Estournel holds a prestigious position in the Médoc and has a long track record of producing wines of striking power, sensuality and longevity. Over the last several decades, significant investment in vineyard management and cellar technology has further elevated the estate’s reputation, making its grand vin one of the most sought-after wines in Bordeaux, especially in outstanding vintages such as 2009.
