Description
Corsignano La Luna Toscana IGT 2018 is a characterful red wine crafted from 100% Malvasia Nera, a traditional yet rarely seen Tuscan variety more often found in blends than starring solo. This bottling lets the grape fully express its dark-fruited charm, spice and gentle floral notes in a sleek, modern Tuscan style. Certified organic and produced in a fully CO₂-free estate powered by solar energy, La Luna combines authentic regional personality with a strong commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. The 2018 vintage shows a refined balance between ripe Mediterranean fruit and fresh acidity, making it both immediately appealing and gastronomic. While Tuscany is best known for Sangiovese, this wine highlights another historic face of the region, offering a more intimate glimpse into local tradition and Corsignano’s experimental, terroir-driven approach.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Corsignano La Luna 2018 presents a deep ruby color with purple reflections, hinting at both concentration and youthful energy still remaining in the wine. The nose opens with aromas of black cherry, ripe plum and wild berries, followed by violet, dried herbs and a touch of sweet spice and cocoa, with a subtle earthy note in the background that speaks of its Tuscan origins.
On the palate, La Luna is medium to medium-full bodied, with silky yet structured tannins and a fresh, lively acidity that keeps the dark fruit from ever feeling heavy. Flavors of black cherry, blackberry and damson are layered with notes of licorice, black pepper, dried roses and a hint of tobacco and cedar from careful élevage. The finish is long, gently savory and persistent, with a fine mineral edge that invites another sip. The 2018 is drinking beautifully now, with its tannins well integrated, but it still has the structure to evolve gracefully for another 3–5 years, gaining more tertiary notes of leather, dried fruit and forest floor.
Production
Corsignano lies in the hills of Tuscany near Siena, surrounded by classic Chianti Classico landscapes of well-drained galestro and alberese soils, alternating with clay and limestone. This mix of rocky, mineral-rich terroir and warm days cooled by evening breezes creates ideal conditions for slower, even ripening and aromatic complexity in Malvasia Nera. The estate has been certified organic since 2014, with vineyard work focused on low-impact, sustainable farming: careful canopy management, green harvesting when needed, and hand selection of bunches at optimal ripeness. Grapes for La Luna are harvested by hand to ensure only the healthiest fruit reaches the cellar. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, allowing a clean, precise expression of the variety, followed by maturation in a combination of neutral vessels and, where used, larger or older wood to round the tannins without dominating the fruit. The result is a finely poised red that showcases both the character of Malvasia Nera and the nuances of Corsignano’s terroir.
Food & Serving
Corsignano La Luna Toscana IGT 2018 is a versatile food wine that pairs beautifully with Tuscan-inspired dishes such as grilled lamb cutlets, tagliata di manzo, roasted pork with herbs, or a rich wild boar ragù over pappardelle. It also works well with aged pecorino, mushroom-based dishes, roasted root vegetables and charcuterie. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight both aromatics and structure; if the wine is too warm, the alcohol will feel more pronounced and the freshness will be less evident. Decanting for 30–45 minutes is recommended to allow the aromatics to fully open and the tannins to soften, especially if enjoyed at the upper end of its drinking window.
Producer
Fattoria di Corsignano is a boutique Tuscan estate located in the heart of the Chianti Classico area, with a long-standing dedication to quality winemaking closely tied to the city of Siena and its surrounding hills. Fully certified organic since 2014, the winery has built its reputation on elegant, long-lived Sangiovese-based Chianti Classico, Chianti Classico Riserva and Gran Selezione, alongside Rosso and Rosato Toscana IGT, Vinsanto and Grappa di Chianti Classico. Corsignano unites traditional know-how with modern agronomic techniques, all within a certified environmentally friendly, CO₂-free operation powered by solar energy. The estate is known for wines that are refined, approachable yet complex, and capable of evolving beautifully in the glass—qualities that have made Corsignano a respected reference point for sustainably produced, terroir-driven wines in the region. La Luna fits into this philosophy as a distinctive expression of a lesser-seen local grape, crafted with the same care and attention as the estate’s flagship Chianti Classico wines.
