Description
Compagnie Des Indes Guyana 14 ans is a limited-edition single-origin rum distilled at the famed Diamond Distillery in May 2003 and bottled in August 2017. Matured for 14 years and bottled at 43% ABV without chill-filtration, it captures the classic depth and character of Guyanese Demerara rum in a refined, contemplative style. Selected and bottled by the independent bottler Compagnie des Indes in France, this release showcases the pure expression of its origin rather than heavy cask influence.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Guyanese rum shows a deep amber hue with golden highlights, hinting at extended aging in oak. The nose opens with dark Demerara sugar, molasses, and caramelized banana, followed by notes of baking spices, toasted oak, damp tobacco leaf, and a subtle hint of dried tropical fruit and cocoa. A gentle estery note and a touch of vanilla round out the aromatic profile.
On the palate, it is smooth yet structured, with flavors of brown sugar, toffee, and ripe plantain layered over roasted coffee, leather, and a faint licorice edge. The texture is supple and elegant rather than heavy, with the 43% ABV offering balance and drinkability while still carrying plenty of flavor. The finish is long and warming, with lingering molasses, oak spice, and a trace of dark chocolate. Already fully mature at 14 years, this rum is at its peak for drinking now, but well-stored bottles can hold and develop a touch more complexity over the next several years.
Production
This rum originates from Guyana’s historic Demerara region, where rich alluvial soils along the Demerara River and a humid tropical climate produce cane with notable sweetness and intensity. Distilled at the renowned Diamond Distillery in May 2003, it draws on a heritage of traditional Guyanese rum-making that often includes use of characterful heritage stills and slow distillation to concentrate flavor. After careful fermentation and distillation, the spirit was aged for 14 years in oak barrels, where the warm climate encouraged steady interaction between wood and rum. Compagnie des Indes then selected and bottled this limited release in France in August 2017 without chill-filtration, preserving texture, aromatic complexity, and the full character of its Guyanese origin.
Food & Serving
Compagnie Des Indes Guyana 14 ans is best enjoyed neat or with just a few drops of water to open up the aromatics. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 18–20°C (64–68°F), to highlight its balance of sweetness, spice, and oak. A brief rest in the glass, or a light decant into a small carafe, will allow the nose to fully unfold. In terms of food pairing, it works beautifully with dark chocolate desserts, caramel tarts, pecan pie, or aged hard cheeses. It also pairs well with roasted nuts, spiced desserts, or a fine cigar, making it an ideal contemplative after-dinner rum.
Producer
Compagnie des Indes is a French independent bottler founded with the spirit of the historic East India Companies of the 17th and 18th centuries in mind—trading houses that sourced rare and precious goods from distant lands. Applying that same philosophy to rum, Compagnie des Indes focuses on carefully selected single casks and character-driven blends from a range of origins across the Caribbean, Latin America, and beyond. Their mission is to showcase the individuality of each terroir and distillery, bottling rums with minimal intervention to let origin and style shine through. Revered by enthusiasts for their transparency, thoughtful cask selection, and region-focused releases, they have become an important name in the world of premium and collector-grade rum.
