Colgin IX Estate Syrah 2016

Colgin IX Estate Napa Valley Syrah 2016 is a remarkable 100% Syrah from one of Napa Valley’s most celebrated hillside sites on Pritchard Hill. Crafted from carefully selected Rhône-inspired clones, it combines the power and spice of top Northern Rhône Syrah with the richness and precision that have made Colgin a benchmark producer in California.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, dark purple-black color that hints at its concentration. The nose is layered and seductive, with aromas of black cherry, blackberry preserves, plum, licorice, graphite, smoked meat, orange blossom, violets, and a touch of wild sage and tar.\n\nThe palate is full-bodied, intense, and remarkably polished, delivering waves of ripe dark fruit, savory spice, and floral lift. Despite its impressive richness, it remains seamless and elegant, with fine structure and a long, spicy finish. This is a wine with excellent aging potential and should continue to evolve beautifully over the next 10–20 years.

Production
The grapes come from Colgin’s IX Estate vineyard, a steep 20-hectare site high above Lake Hennessey on Pritchard Hill in Napa Valley. The hillside terroir brings concentration, structure, and aromatic complexity, while the estate’s clonal material was chosen for its pedigree from Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage. Winemaker Allison Tauziet fermented the wine at around 20°C before aging it for two years in entirely new French oak barrels, a regimen that adds depth, texture, and refinement.

Food & Serving
This Syrah pairs beautifully with richly flavored dishes such as grilled lamb, beef short ribs, venison, duck breast, smoked sausages, or charred mushrooms. It also works well with herb-roasted meats and peppery sauces. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the aromatics and texture to fully open up.
