Description
Col d'Orcia Brunello di Montalcino Poggio al Vento Riserva 2016 is one of the benchmark single-vineyard Brunellos from the southern hills of Montalcino. Produced only in outstanding vintages, this Riserva captures the depth, precision and longevity that have made Brunello a world-class classic. Poggio al Vento—literally “windy hill”—delivers a Brunello of remarkable structure, complexity and elegance, built for long-term cellaring.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2016 Poggio al Vento Riserva shows a deep, vibrant garnet core with ruby highlights at the rim, signaling both concentration and freshness. The nose is layered and refined, offering aromas of wild cherry, dried rose petals, blood orange, and plum, interwoven with notes of tobacco leaf, leather, Mediterranean herbs, cedar and a subtle balsamic lift.
On the palate, this is a classic, firmly structured Brunello made from Sangiovese Grosso (locally known as Brunello). The attack is precise and energetic, with juicy red cherry, redcurrant and hints of black tea unfolding into darker notes of black cherry, licorice and cocoa. Fine-grained tannins are abundant yet polished, wrapped around a spine of vibrant acidity that keeps the wine focused and long. Hints of earthy spice, cigar box and savory minerality emerge on the persistent finish. The 2016 vintage is renowned for its balance and aging potential; this Riserva will reward patience, evolving gracefully over 15–25+ years in a proper cellar.
Production
Poggio al Vento is a single, windswept vineyard on the southwestern side of Montalcino, where Col d’Orcia’s organically farmed Sangiovese vines grow on well-drained, stony soils rich in limestone and marl. The elevation and constant breezes help promote slow, even ripening and preserve aromatic freshness, while the Mediterranean climate ensures excellent concentration and phenolic maturity. Grapes are harvested by hand with rigorous bunch selection in the vineyard and again at the winery to ensure only the finest fruit is used for this Riserva. Fermentation traditionally takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel or concrete tanks, with extended maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin and complex aromatics from Sangiovese Grosso. The wine is then aged for several years in large Slavonian oak casks—often followed by additional time in bottle—allowing the powerful structure to integrate while maintaining the purity and typicity of Montalcino’s terroir.
Food & Serving
This Brunello Riserva shines alongside refined, richly flavored dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or veal, roast lamb with rosemary, game birds, and aged pecorino or Parmigiano-Reggiano. Earthy mushroom dishes, truffle pasta and hearty Tuscan stews (like cinghiale/wild boar ragù) also make superb partners. Serve at 18°C (64–66°F) in large Burgundy or Bordeaux-style glasses to showcase its aromatic complexity. Decanting is strongly recommended—at least 1–2 hours for current drinking—to allow the wine to open up, while older bottles should be handled gently and decanted briefly just to remove sediment.
Producer
Col d’Orcia is one of Montalcino’s historic estates and a leading name in Brunello, with a legacy that stretches back centuries on the southern slopes of the appellation. Long recognized as a traditionalist house, Col d’Orcia has championed classic, ageworthy Sangiovese and has been a pioneer in converting its extensive holdings to certified organic viticulture, becoming one of the largest organic estates in Tuscany. The estate’s location in the Sant’Angelo in Colle area provides a distinctive, sun-drenched yet breezy microclimate that is reflected in the depth and character of its wines. Poggio al Vento is Col d’Orcia’s flagship single-vineyard Brunello Riserva and one of Montalcino’s most respected labels, regularly earning top scores and cementing the winery’s reputation as a benchmark producer in the region.
