In the glass, Clerc Milon 2022 shows a deep, saturated ruby-purple color, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose opens with intense blackcurrant and crème de cassis, followed by notes of black cherry, licorice, violet and subtle graphite, wrapped in a sheen of high-quality, creamy new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, rich and multi-layered, yet lifted by vibrant acidity that keeps it precise rather than heavy. Ripe, finely integrated tannins provide a polished, velvety structure, supporting flavors of dark berries, plum, cocoa, sweet spice and a touch of cedar. The finish is long and persistent, with a lingering cassis core and a hint of saline minerality from the clay-limestone soils. While already impressive in its youth, this 2022 Clerc Milon has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully for 10–20 years and beyond in a good cellar.

Production
Clerc Milon lies in Pauillac in the Médoc, drawing on gravelly vineyard sites with significant clay and limestone influences that contribute both power and freshness. The terroir’s mix of well-drained gravel and cooler clay-limestone parcels helps Cabernet Sauvignon and its Bordeaux companions achieve full ripeness while preserving aromatic lift and vivid acidity—particularly important in a sunny year like 2022. Grapes are typically harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, to bring in only optimally ripe fruit. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, allowing for careful extraction of color, tannin and aroma, followed by maturation in French oak barrels (a proportion of which are new) to develop complexity, refine the tannins and integrate the oak nuances with the wine’s pure Pauillac fruit.

Once a relatively modest estate, it has been significantly revitalized since coming under the ownership of the Baron Philippe de Rothschild family, who have invested in the vineyards and cellar to elevate quality. Today, Clerc Milon is widely regarded as one of the best values among the classified growths of Pauillac, consistently producing wines that combine the appellation’s hallmark power and structure with increasing finesse, precision and terroir expression, particularly from its distinctive clay-limestone parcels.
