Description

Christophe Pichon Viognier 2016 is a beautifully expressive Rhône white that showcases the aromatic charm and texture that have made this grape so beloved. Crafted by one of the region’s most respected producers, it offers a refined, Condrieu‑inspired style at a more accessible level. This wine stands out for its balance between opulent fruit, floral complexity and a fresh, food‑friendly frame, echoing the long tradition of Viognier along the steep slopes of the northern Rhône.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2016 Viognier is a bright, luminous straw-gold with subtle green reflections, hinting at both youth and freshness. The nose is intensely perfumed and layered: ripe apricot, white peach and nectarine are wrapped in notes of orange blossom, jasmine and honeysuckle, with a touch of ripe pear and a gentle whisper of vanilla and almond. On the palate, it is generous yet precise, with a silky, almost glycerol texture that is typical of well-made Viognier. Stone fruits lead the flavour profile, joined by hints of mandarin zest, preserved lemon and a delicate spice note reminiscent of ginger and white pepper. The finish is long, clean and slightly saline, bringing lift and definition to the wine’s richness. While drinking beautifully now, especially given the vintage’s maturity, it can continue to evolve positively for another 2–4 years, developing more honeyed and nutty nuances with time in bottle.

Production
Christophe Pichon sources his Viognier from vineyards in the northern Rhône, where steep, well-exposed slopes and poor, rocky soils (often granite-based with sandy, decomposed topsoils) naturally limit yields and concentrate flavour. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to preserve berry integrity and allow for strict selection in the vineyard. In the cellar, Pichon favours a gentle, protective vinification: careful pressing, cool fermentation to safeguard aromatics, and a measured use of stainless steel and/or neutral oak for élevage, adding texture and complexity without masking the purity of the fruit. The result is a Viognier that is both expressive and finely tuned, reflecting its Rhône origins.

Food & Serving
This Viognier is a versatile partner at the table, shining alongside dishes that echo its aromatic richness and supple texture. Try it with roasted chicken with herbs, veal in a light cream sauce, or richer seafood such as seared scallops, lobster, or monkfish. It also pairs beautifully with aromatic cuisines—think lightly spiced Thai or Vietnamese dishes—and with soft, creamy cheeses like Saint-Marcellin or young goat’s cheese. Serve chilled but not too cold, ideally around 10–12°C, to let its aromatics fully unfurl. A short decant of 15–20 minutes, or simply opening the bottle a little before serving, can further enhance its bouquet and mouthfeel.

Producer
Domaine Christophe Pichon is a family-run estate in the northern Rhône, where Christophe took over from his father in 1991 and has since elevated the domaine’s reputation significantly. With prime holdings in Saint-Joseph, Condrieu and Côte-Rôtie, the estate is known for crafting precise, characterful wines that showcase the nuances of each appellation and grape variety. Over the years, Christophe Pichon has become a reference name in the region, recognised for meticulous vineyard work on steep, terraced slopes and a thoughtful, quality-driven approach in the cellar. His Viognier, in particular, reflects the domaine’s deep connection to Condrieu’s traditions while offering exceptional value and authenticity within the broader Rhône landscape.
